Alfred Cheung (Her Fatal Ways) directs the 1984 fish-out-of-water comedy Family Light Affair! Chan Pak Chi (Anthony Chan) brings his family from Mainland China to Hong Kong to search for his father, but what they find isn't a city lined with gold! Dad (Goo Fung) only has a bed to his name, and when he passes away, the family is left alone with nothing and nobody to aid them. Chan, his wife Yin (Kara Wai Ying Hung), and their two daughters can only rely on their wits and the occasional trick or two to stay alive, which is an experience far removed from the Hong Kong they'd heard so much about back on the Mainland! Alfred Cheung explores the tried-and-true disparities between Hong Kong and Mainland Chinese citizens in this culture clash comedy that predated his blockbuster culture-clash cop movie Her Fatal Ways by seven years.

Good theme, terrible acting and directing.

Very Disappointed. Could have been a much better film if the directing was better. The voice over is also very annoying, too loud cover everything else, seems like the whole movie happened in a small room. The only thing I like it is how the 2 kids longing to watch the city night scape, and the song sung by a kid voice. |
