YesAsia Editorial Description
Featuring an all-star Hong Kong cast gamely hamming it up, 2004 Lunar New Year comedy Fantasia invites you to cascades of laughter in 1970s Hong Kong. Louis Koo, Lau Ching Wan, and Jordan Chan, donning 70s Hui brothers hair, play bumbling private detectives who discover a magic lamp. From the lamp comes Cecilia Cheung portraying a homely genie with Harry Potter-meets-Lam Ah Chun fashion sense. Francis Ng wreaks trouble as perennial bad guy Kin, along with the gogo dress Chopstick Sisters played by Twins. There's even a kung-fu kicking, garbage-producing dinosaur in there somewhere! Written and directed by Wai Ka Fai, Fantasia is a hilarious homage to the silly New Year's comedies and fond Hong Kong memories of yesteryear.

Leaves you laughing
|
Once upon a Lunar New Year my friends and I decided to check out the seasonal comedy Fantasia by Wai Ka Fai and were caught in a torrent of laughter. Recently giving the amusing fantasy comedy a second viewing at home with the same hilarious effects, I now recommend it wholeheartedly to everyone in the mood for a little Hong Kong nostalgia. Set in Hong Kong's roaring late 60s, Fantasia stars Cecilia Cheung as fairy Harmy Bobo who winds up in a rundown private detective agency having a hard time convincing the owners that her magic is for real until her best friend, the rubbish monster, marches in. Treading on the paths of such classic Hui Brothers comedies as The Private Eyes and Games Gamblers Play, Fantasia leaps to exceptional comic dimensions and leaves viewers chuckling, especially those of Hong Kong origin. There is probably no sport that comes close to the popularity of mahjong in Hong Kong and the scene revolving around a manipulated mahjong game is among my favorite scenes in the film. It shows easily upset crook Kin (Francis Ng in an over-the-top performance) oppress competitor Michael (Lau Ching Wan) in such a way that he has a hard time keeping down the playing tiles. Recovering from the torturous game against the foul player, Michael later has to survive a battle against the rubbish monster with the help of a pair of sausage nunchakus that show little effect against his sharp-teethed opponent but make for an amusing addition in the film. Louis Koo obviously also enjoyed his role as penniless detective assistant Sam, revealing his comical self by means of a hilarious wannabe Bruce Lee performance marked by facial expressions that admittedly don't resemble that of the legend in any way but nevertheless will leave you cheering. The forever-smiling Twins meanwhile don't let down expectations, adding to the fun as Chopstick Sisters promising to make you chant along as they perform the film's feel-good song I Love HK. Inviting the viewer to a stroll down memory lane to a time when Bruce Lee's fame was soaring and Sam Hui's unforgettable Canto-pop hits added flavor to daily life, Fantasia unfolds its magic with plenty of laughs along the way. |

I laughed and laughed.

Good acting by all enhanced this funny goofy movie. Lau Ching Wan fan was really funny as a cheap and money tight private detective owner... There are 4 storey lines for the 4 leading actors and every body got almost equal screen time and all quite entertaining. Plots are unusual and amusing: 1970's style singing and dancing by of course the TWINS and Francis Ng/ the jealous wizard dinosaur cousin of Cecilia Cheung/ the funny side of Francis Ng... Ha Ha Ha I agree with the Sept 2005 review that this is destined to be a cult classic ! A happy ending too. |

Good Film
|
Despite all the negative comments made about this film I really enjoyed it. I don't particulary like twins but I thought their performance in this film wasn't that bad and also they didn't have a big part. This film was funny although I wouldn't recommend it to people who like serious complex films. |
