Though not as well-known as that other Maggie Cheung-starring drama about the Chinese immigrant experience in New York City (Comrades, Almost a Love Story), Clara Law's brilliant and harrowing 1990 masterwork Farewell China is every bit as accomplished. This modern twist on the Orpheus and Eurydice myth, filmed on location in New York's Chinatown, boasts the by-now expected stellar performance from Cheung, but Tony Leung Ka Fai's (Dragon Inn) moving portrayal of an illegal immigrant from Mainland China desperately seeking his lost wife in the Big Apple is just as crucial to the film's success. Heart-wrenching without being ham-fisted, Farewell China was nominated for nine awards at the 1991 Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Picture.
Zhou and his wife Li want to emigrate to America, but only Li is able to procure a visa, so she goes ahead to prepare a new life in New York while Zhou waits for his own paperwork to come through. One year later, Zhou receives a terse and cryptic letter from Li demanding a divorce. Leaving their baby child behind, Zhou sneaks into America in a desperate bid to find his wife. Navigating the seedy underworld of New York's Chinatown, Zhou is aided by a streetwise Chinese-American in his quest for Li. Witnessing firsthand the hardships and broken dreams of the immigrant experience, Zhou soon begins to fear the worst for his once-idealistic young wife.
