Hong Kong Cinema dream team Johnnie To and Wai Ka Fai team up with a stellar cast led by Andy Lau for the blockbuster mahjong comedy Fat Choi Spirit! Released during the Chinese New Year holiday in 2002, the festive crowd-pleaser garnered great word-of-mouth for taking the traditional gambling genre to a new level on account of its smart, funny script and colorful characters played by the likes of Gigi Leung, Louis Koo, Cherrie Ying, and Lau Ching Wan.

"Mahjong Master" Andy once incurred huge debts and the hatred of his younger brother Louis due to his relentless passion for the game. Years later, when Louis gets cheated out of all his money in a game of mahjong with con artists Ching Wan and Cherrie, Andy avenges him by defeating Ching Wan on the mahjong table. But once his ex-girlfriend Gigi, who was ditched for her dubious morals at the game, curses him out of frustration at his repeated rejection, Andy begins to fall on a streak of bad luck!

　　Andy is a legendary Mahjong player. Years ago Andy's passion for Mahjong cost his family their entire fortune, his brother Louis then turned against him. Thus now Louis suffers from economy downturn. Andy offers to take care of him and their aging mother. Meanwhile, Louis is being trapped by a job interview supervisor and her cons, Sean. Andy revenged Sean by beating him at the game table. Gigi, Andy's ex-flame, is increasing disappointment in Andy's rejection, she wishes he'll never win at the Mahjong table again. This is a fun movie that guarantees to puts you in a good mood. Great acting all around, especially Gigi Leung, funny and touching. Great image and sound quality too. There's great chemistry between Andy Lau and Gigi.

This was harmless mindless entertainment -- generally a decent crowd pleaser, especially if you are a MJ addict. Of course the characters were caricatures and there was a bunch of preachy stuff about good sportsmanship and how MJ has some meaning related to the philosophy of life and human relatonships. Light comedy that will bring a smile to your face.

this movie is really GREAT!! Sean Lau is very good in here although he kind of over does his character but that made him funny HAHA. GiGi sucks in here. Andy Lau was good. Louis Koo was ok. Cherie was ok. But andy and louis' mom was REALLY good!!
