ATV's Fatherland is the station's most classic drama from the RTV years, even beating out TVB in the ratings battle when it started airing in 1980. Fatherland was broadcast in three installments - Home on the River Pearl, Radical City, and American Dream - offering a sweeping depiction of Chinese modern history from the commoner's perspective. The final chapter of the series, American Dream revolves around a common, tragic practice in the early 1900s when countless farmers and laborers were lured by promises of wealth to the United States where gold supposedly lined the sidewalks. After a grueling and dangerous journey, what greets them is a life of hard indentured labor. American Dream portrays the conditions of the early Chinese diaspora as well as the changes that fall upon the Yeung family and their small village during these big times.

「金山夢」描述農民被賣豬仔到金山的慘痛遭遇，道盡早期華人在異地刻苦奮鬥的生活情況，以及廣興圍所發生的巨變。1920年仲夏，烈日當空，楊九斤（劉志榮）與何文若（伍衛國）等華工剛抵美國一果園，繼續完成合約末期工作。
另外，在廣興圍，楊家生活困苦，六斤（兵華）辛勤工作，阿香（梁淑莊）產下四牛，而大牛及潔貞之女念美亦己長得天真活潑，阿滿（馬敏兒）已亭亭玉立，專責照顧容舉人（董驃）嫡孫國維，深得舉人歡心。後來，旅長唐秉勳（秦沛）垂涎阿滿美色，要納為妾待，並以權力逼舉人就範，阿滿隻身逃往省城，求容亨（潘志文）返鄉作主，事情終於得到解決，秉勳未能得逞淫慾。而九斤等人卻在美集資購買廢礦開採，但發生了一連串不幸的事……

Major letdown!

I was going to give this series 4.5 stars out of 5 until the last two episodes. The first 6 episodes, though not on par with the 36 episodes of Fatherland I, still had some of its heart. It was still very educational and touching. It was worth watching, at the very least degree, for closure purposes. However I would like to pretend the last 2 episodes did not happen. After the great build up and anticipation, the ending was a terrible letdown. It was totally inconsistent with the themes that were built in Fatherland I. Fatherland, whom I believe to be the best 36 episodes in Hong Kong TV series history, seemed pointless after the last 2 episodes. I felt totally empty after finishing this series, didn't feel there was adequate or appropriate closure. WHAT WERE THE PRODUCERS OF FATHERLAND III thinking???? I would've rioted after the airing of the last episode if I lived in Hong Kong at the time, and I don't think I would've been alone. Heard many people closely followed this series when it aired. I hated the main character, and again I don't think I'm alone. In my book, he's the most hated non-villian main character out of any series I've ever seen. I must commend the actor Lau Chi Wing though, for being professional and taking the chance of destroying his popularity with this role. I hope his career didn't suffer too much, as I am not sure if he had control over the script. I think I'm going to find some booze now so I can forget about the ending. |

One of the best ATV Series in the 80s
| When ATV and TVB were fighting for the top ratings, this series beat TVB ratings sucessfully. A mega series and star starring old time actor and host, Lau Chi Wing, female actress, Yu On On and lots of old time movie stars seen acting during the Shaw Brother era. |
