YesAsia Editorial Description
Home on the River Pearl
Set in the late Qing to the early Republican era, Fatherland - Home on the River Pearl is an epic story of small rural life and sweeping historical changes. Hailing from a small Guangdong village, the humble Yeung family and the trials and tribulations they face paint a realistic portrait of the times, from the major historical events and political winds - the establishment of the Republic of China, the Yuan Shikai era - that serve as backdrop, to the individual ordeals that tell the story of so many. With a cast that included David Lau, Ngok Wah, Candice Yu, Poon Chi Man, Bill Tung, and Moon Lee, Fatherland - Home of the River Pearl's sweeping depiction of family, romance, timeless values, and heartrending struggles in rural China served as the model for TVB's later series of Plain Love dramas.
Radical City
After the rural toils of Home on the River Pearl, the second chapter in the series, Radical City, shifts focus to the turbulent passion and politics of Beijing from 1919 to 1920, covering the May 4th Movement to the Zhili-Anhui War. The Republic of China comes of age amidst the power struggle among the Beijing cliques, the breakdown between the north and the south, and the rising clamor of university movements. Top idols of the day Michelle Yim and Damian Lau star as idealistic student revolutionaries whose lives are upturned by the times, and Poon Chi Man portrays a southern delegate who travels to Beijing to carry out dialogue with the government.
American Dream
The final chapter of the series, American Dream revolves around a common, tragic practice in the early 1900s when countless farmers and laborers were lured by promises of wealth to the United States where gold supposedly lined the sidewalks. After a grueling and dangerous journey, what greets them is a life of hard indentured labor. American Dream portrays the conditions of the early Chinese diaspora as well as the changes that fall upon the Yeung family and their small village during these big times.

Best series ever !!!!
|
This series is a must for anybody of Cantonese descent. You will appreciate your ancestors so much more when you see what they had to deal with. My grandmother and great grandmother said that the series was very realistic; several parts of the series brought the whole family, young and old, to tears. Its a shame that they dont' make series like this anymore! Everything about this series was quality - the actors, the setting, the plot, and especially the attention to detail (everything flowed and all characters actions were logical). There wasn't a single wasted scene. The producers of the series and the actors showed a lot of heart in this series. One minor negative, the ending to Fatherland (I) is a bit open-ended. For completion and satisfaction purposes you will probably want to purchase Fatherland (II) and (III). That's a big hole in your wallet :) Fatherland II was good but not great and cannot be compared to Fatherland (I). If YesAsia or anywhere else is still carrying this series (hint: best to ask to make sure they have the whole set available for purchase - not just half the series) obtain it. |

This customer review refers to Fatherland (I) - Home on The River Pearl (VCD) (Vol. 2 Of 2) (End) (Hong Kong Version)
| A most interesting period in recent Chinese history, well acted and full of endearing characters , well paced with action , light comical and heart felt dramatic scenes. Its refreshing to have an opening theme song that is not sung to lots of snippets from the main feature. I hope Fatherland 2 and 3 are just as good. |

Collector's item
| Truely a classic. Great acting, music, and costume. True reflection of Gongdong village life style of the early 20th century to even the 80s before China opened up. |
