Proving that the remake process works both ways comes Femme Fatale, a new Korean version of the 1998 French film Serial Lover which marks the debut of director Kang Kyung Hoon. Although updated to work in some distinctly Korean humour, the film is basically the same brand of black comedy, revolving around a raucous night of romance, misunderstandings and accidental homicide. The fun begins as famous actress Ji Won (Ye Ji Won, who recently had a hit with Old Miss Diary) is surprised at her home by a motley bunch of suitors comprised of an overly verbose professor, an insecure gangster, a smarmy Korean American, and the weird director of her latest film. It quickly emerges that she has been stringing them along, and understandably, they want answers, not least since they have all turned up with the intention of proposing marriage. Things go downhill after Ji Won inadvertently kills one of her potential husbands, and from then on the night becomes a disaster of murderous proportions as she and her manager try to keep the accidents under wraps, a task made all the more difficult by a couple of detectives on the trail of a thief dressed as Santa Claus and the gangsters’ concerned henchmen. Who will end up with Ji Won? And more importantly, who will survive the night? As an adaptation of a French comedy, Femme Fatale has the feel of a traditional farce in the best possible sense of the word, being cleverly constructed, well paced and featuring a great sense of comic timing. As such, just as much effort is put into the plot as into the gags, and the film is surprisingly suspenseful as the bodies build up and Ji Won gradually runs out of hiding places, getting more and more inventive as things progress. Indeed, a large part of the running time is taken up with scenes of characters conveniently turning their backs while corpses fall out of cupboard and fridges and the poor girl runs around trying to shove them back in. This works very well, mainly thanks to a great performance from Ye Ji Won, who again shows herself to be a winning female lead, and the viewer is engaged throughout. More important is the fact that Femme Fatale is very funny, a perfectly pitched black comedy that never becomes to mean spirited or dark despite the subject matter, and which retains a strangely light and upbeat tone throughout, largely since the viewer genuinely hopes that Ji Won will emerge unscathed. The humour is a great mixture, with plenty of wacky misunderstandings, good corpse disposal gags and slapstick, and even a smattering of toilet humour quite literally thrown in for good measure. Many of the jokes are fresh and innovative, such as the unique sight of an unfortunate man impaled on a frozen fish - not something which viewers are likely to see too often. Physical comedy aside, the film has an amusing bunch of characters, most of whom are all equally funny alive or dead, whether engaging in petty squabbling and one-upmanship or being shoved into awkward small spaces with a rigour mortis inspired grin on their faces. There is also a nice line in film references, with Kang managing to work in a bizarre Kim Ki Duk gag, which may or may not be a dig at the grumpy director, and a wonderful Ringu parody which is probably the funniest moment in the film or indeed from any Korean comedy of late. Kang keeps a tight rein on things throughout, making the most of the limited locations, and his direction is surprisingly assured for a debut outing. There is an air of manic energy to the proceedings that he manages to maintain right the way through to the wacky climax without ever succumbing to the lure of melodrama or anything too predictable. The film is not perfect, and he does make a few missteps, notably the Santa Claus thief subplot, which while it does eventually tie in with the main plot is for the most part merely a distraction, as well as the party scene towards the end feels a little forced. However, these are very minor criticisms indeed, and Femme Fatale is a great success and arguably the funniest Korean comedy in some years. Both the director and the leading lady show a real talent for this kind of material, and the film stands out not simply as a well executed slice of hilarity, but as a result of being an excellent piece of cinema in general. by James Mudge - BeyondHollywood.com |

In "Femme Fatale", a movie starlet yearning for critical respectability learns that she has been nominated for an acting award in Europe. (She believes it is an award from the world-famous Cannes Film Festival, but it actually is from the unknown festival in Kahn, Germany.) Her manager seeks to persuade her to get to bed early so they can make their early morning flight for the award ceremony. But the starlet and her friends have other ideas. Four of the actress's suitors show up, all hoping to give her an engagement ring before she departs. They squabble amongst each other and bumblingly attempt to woo the starlet. One of the suitors, in his fumbling effort to impress the actress, slips and falls and dies (in a most unusual manner). The starlet fears that his entirely innocent death will cause a scandal that may cost her the award, so, rather than reporting it, she furiously scrambles to hide the body. As you might expect in a madcap comedy of this kind, all of the efforts of the starlet and her manager to keep things under control only leads to crazier and crazier turns of events. One after another, her suitors suffer bizarre accidental deaths that the starlet desperately seeks to cover up. At the same time, a burglar is wandering around the house, police detectives are coming in and out of the house in search of the burglar, and the starlet's sister visits the house with an army of revelers in tow. The beautiful Ye Ji Won is irresistible as the hapless starlet. She strikes just the right notes of vanity, vacuity, and desperation. The director keeps the comic action flying along at breakneck speed and there never is a dull moment. Fans of the old "Fawlty Towers" TV series will love this film. I did, too, and I recommend it highly. |

Superb
|
The film is MEANT to be cooky, unrealistic, and simple. Thats like saying an action film is terrible because theres too much fighting. If your looking for a genuinely fun comedy featuring superb performances and truly stylish direction, you cant go wrong here. |

A Fem's Fatal Charm

The more closer translation to this Korean movie "Jugeodo haepi ending" (Happy Kill), could suggest by the title that it could be about a crazy paranoid actress who kills off (happily) some stalker type men, one by one, (which could have been an interesting movie). But not quite the case, as what you have here is one frantic and farcical black comedy of a situation of errors (base on a French satire called "Serial Lover") about a Korean movie actress (seemingly Ji Won Ye aptly using her own name here), who after hearing news of her Kannes film festival 'best actress nomination', dreams of starlight, red carpets, fame and fortune as she anticipates the event - but instead, finds herself having one hell of a madcap and crazy night within her posh house - as men keep dropping dead on her. This is a frenetic and bizarre K-comedy, with some quite original and goofy laughs, but its all insane, to say the least. On the night of Christmas Eve, when drop dead gorgeous Ji Won Ye hears her positive news, she then suddenly finds 5 male suitors calling on her home (with various agendas, but wedding rings and money come in to it, in the main), including a playboy Korean American, a gangster and a besotted film director (who keeps popping pills, due to his love sick state), who are all wanting to give their hand in marriage to her (a hand?....no it doesn't get like the Munsters, but nearly). Although she obliges and plays the good host, the last thing on her mind is marriage. Fate though rescues Ji Won (in the form of Murphy's Law), obliging her dizzy situation with all these men at hand, when after finding herself alone in her kitchen with the playboy Korean American, he accidentally slips on some ice cubes and lands bang smack onto a frozen fish and impaling himself - which, unfortunately, leaves him....eh?......dead. Jaw open wide in shock, panic stricken in motion, one hand holding a carving knife (as she was preparing some food) Ji Won then (instead of getting an ambulance or calling the police.....for some reason), tries frantically to hide the playboy American's body, so that nobody would think she had killed him (which she hadn't, but don't look for too much logic here). So commences Jo Won's 'all these men keep dying on me' fiasco of madcap lunacy and farce. And madcap is the operative word here! Eventually, Ji Won confides in her manager (as he catches her in transit getting a body out of site), and after his initial shock, decides to help her hide the body. This of course only makes things worse, and what follows are more of her 'loving suitors' falling into similar bizarre accidents, as the plot thickens. To get even worse (following the blue print of farcical comedies), a detective keeps making appearances, due to a spate of break-ins. Now, the detective is played by Hyun Sung Jang, who generally features in more serious dramas, but here is a dead pan and steely detective playing it straight in a comedy, which turns out to be one of the best roles I have seen him in. Amusingly, you can tell when he is about off camera, as a room lights up due to his constant light ups of his cigarettes - that seem to have an abnormally strong glow effect. His lighter in flame thrower mode, I think. "Femme Fatale" excels at a fast and furious pace, constantly adding more plot twists to the mix, as Ji Won tires to hide more bodies out of site, stuffing them in fridges and wash rooms, attempting to make things look as normal as possible - as things get considerably worse. Ji Won's sister and a troupe come around to her house, at one point, to celebrate her nomination (which she needed like a hole in the head), two stooges come looking for their gangster boss and even a sneaky thief dressed in a Santa Clause outfit, is busily trying to infiltrate Ji Won's posh abode to steal a few collectibles. The quality and timing to this movie edit is tightly paced and includes quite a lot of good visual and dialog gags and great acting. For instance, when the three suitors produce engagement rings bestowing love (and WON signs in their eyes), likewise the movie director Park (the one in the film) produces a little red heart shaped box and opens it to reveal not a ring, but a load of pills that he takes to keep himself getting too depressed over his love for Ji Won. And also near the end, there is quite a funny and clever "Ringu" / Sadako ghost gag spoof. You can tell this film is going to be mad, when at the beginning, as the men folk arrive, Ji Won is languidly watching the "My Scary Girl" movie on her 100000 inch plasma telly (which also features Eun Ji Jo from "MSG" here, playing her sister!) - with little thought that at any moment, a similar situation to that movie was about to commence. I'd recommend this film if you like a bit of mad satire to fill your life for a while, as I think this will raise a laugh or three, by the irony of it all. It could also (if you're a fella) convince you to refrain from falling in love with an actress, if you want to avoid getting impaled by a frozen fish, too! Still, this is all a good laff, with plenty of genuine funnies and self depreciation to give it all a great thumbs up! Enjoyed it! Especially Hyun Sung's dead pan detective (was he a parody of "My Scary Girl's" detective?) and the Sadako bit. Thpwwtt! Go on, have a laff! |
