2011年のBUMP OF CHICKENは、3月に映画『ドラえもん～新・のび太と鉄人兵団～』主題歌『友達の唄』をリリース、5月には、未曾有の大地震「東日本大震災」のチャリティーシングルとしてリリースされた『Smile』は、多額の義援金を被災地の方々に届けることを実現しました。そして10月、早くも今年第3弾のニューシングルがリリースされます。タイトルは『ゼロ』。このシングルは、大人気RPG『FINAL FANTASY 零式』のテーマソングに決定。『FINAL FANTASY 零式』は、メガヒットシリーズ『FAINAL FANTASY』の最新作品で、メンバー自身大ファンである『FINAL FANTASY』との待望のコラボレーションは、ゲーム制作サイドからの熱烈なオファーから実現したもので、藤原基央はゲーム制作陣と打合せを重ねた上で、まさに『零式』の世界観の本質を見事に楽曲化し、その上で、BUMP OF CHICKENの新曲としての新たな物語りを作り上げました。2曲目には『Smile』を収録。チャリティーシングルとしてリリースされた『Smile』をバンドサウンドにアレンジした、オリジナルの藤原の弾き語りverとは一線を画す、バンドならではのものになっています。また、3曲目には『ゼロ“ FINAL FANTASY 零式”オープニングver.』を収録。これは、ゲーム内のオープニング映像用にオリジナルの『ゼロ』をリアレンジしたもので、『零式』の深く荘厳なオープニング世界のBGMの役割を担う、アコースティックギターと藤原の切実な歌声が美しく響く珠玉の楽曲になります。
