Before Swallowtail Butterfly and All About Lily Chou-Chou, acclaimed director Iwai Shunji presented a much simpler tale of youth in the 1993 television movie Fireworks. Poetically paced and tenderly told, the film interweaves two coming-of-age tales with one hazy dazy summer. Fireworks earned Iwai the Best Newcomer award from the Japanese Director's Association, a sign of greater things to come for the rookie director who would later emerge as one of the most important figures in Japanese cinema.
Summer is here, and Norimichi (Yamazaki Yuta), Yusuke (Sorita Takayuki), and Junichi (Kohashi Kenji) can't seem to agree on an answer to that most pressing question of adolescence: are fireworks flat or round? Should they be viewed from the side or from below? On the night of the summer fireworks display, the boys set out to discover the answer. Meanwhile, Nazuna (Okina Megumi) has greater questions of her own to contend with. Her parents are getting divorced, and at summer's end she has to move away with her mother. Nazuna plans to run away from home before then. Unbeknownst to Norimichi and Yusuke, she decides that one of them will be accompanying her.

Two intertwined tales explore how one tiny incident can change everything. Sixth-graders Norimichi, Yusuke and Junichi can't quite figure out how fireworks look when seen from the side. Do they look round? Or do they look flat? Experimenting for themselves seems like a perfect way to find out, so on the night of the Summer Fireworks, the threesome decide to embark on a little adventure. On the same day, their classmate Nazuna is planning to 'elope' with either Norimichi or Yusuke, whoever wins a 50m swimming race.
Friendship or love? This eternal question is the underlying theme in these two interesting stories stuffed with heart, innocence and charm.
