YesAsia Editorial Description

A touching and optimistic entreaty on an unlikely homosexual relationship, First Love & Other Pains is an adventurous and even sweet short film from Hong Kong director Simon Chung. Taking place in post-Handover Hong Kong, the film tells the tale of Mark (Alex Wong), a young college student who develops an attraction to his middle-aged English Literature Professor Hugh (Edmond Strode). The initial attraction is enough to lead to a torrid sexual encounter, but with the discovery of love come other difficult, unforeseen issues. Hugh's classroom becomes an uncomfortable and tense place for the two to meet, and the affair awakens feelings of doubt and self-loathing in the alcoholic Englishman. Can two completely different people from two no longer connected cultures find love amongst the ruins? Director Simon Chung brings sensitivity and emotional idealism to First Love & Other Pains, an uncommon love story that transcends its classification as "gay cinema".

First Love? Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Can two completely different people from two no longer connected cultures find love amongst the ruins"?
Of course they can. This story is still as valid today as it was yesterday and will be tomorrow. Mark, a HK Chinese falls in love with his white caucasian teacher. It is the "younger boy - older man" story that we still see so often today. The story is well written although some of the acting - especially from the caucasian - leaves a lot to be desired (= not good!). Don't expect any nude scenes - the cover photo misleads the viewer - that's all you're going to see, and all you need to see in this touching movie. Highly recommended. For the gay asian, the gay white guy and even for the family...
