Director: Gordon Chan

Widely regarded as the greatest film of two legendary careers, Fist of Legend teams superstar Jet Li with martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo-ping (The Matrix) for "some of the best fight sequences you will ever see" (Dan Mitchell, IGN Movies).

In this tribute to Bruce Lee's classic The Chinese Connection (aka Fist of Fury), Li radiates sheer power and coolness as a kung fu phenom living abroad who returns home to avenge the death of his master and save his martial arts school. Shifting effortlessly among diverse fighting styles, Li even fights blindfolded and wields his belt as a deadly weapon. Fist of Legend is essential viewing for any Jet Li fan and "the promised land for kung fu cinema" (HangKongCinema.com).

Professional Review of "Fist Of Legend (1994) (DVD) (Two-Disc Ultimate Edition) (US Version)"

April 9, 2008

This professional review refers to Fist of Legend
If movies were dogs, Fist of Legend would be a Doberman Pinscher: a sleek, black juggernaut with its ears taped back. A remake of Bruce Lee's Fists of Fury (mistakenly called The Chinese Connection overseas), Fist of Legend is a styling call for the downtrodden to rise up against their oppressors. Faithful to its source, the year is 1921 and Jet Li plays a student of the Jingwu Mun school whose Master Huo dies at the hands of the occupying Japanese while Jet is studying abroad. He returns to the Jingwu Mun, in the throes of a leadership crisis, and before you know it he's on the trail of the murderer. If this was Sherlock Holmes, he’d be casting footprints, poring over train schedules, and listening to alibis. But it’s Jet Li, and his investigatory method involves multiple, gravity-defying kicks, and fists that piston like blurs. The action is of the wire fu and heroic pose school, choreographed and executed by Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix) and his stunt maniacs who’re in full effect here as bodies snap, crack, and hit the mat at 800 RPMs. Fist of Legend is a high point in HKSAR action choreography, with fights unfolding in empty arenas and courtyards, giving it all a precise, unadulterated feel.

The narrative is surprisingly clear, and it charges ahead on all eight cylinders. While the film sticks closely to Bruce Lee's storyline (even the funeral portrait of Master Hou is the same), director Gordon Chan and company manage to update things for the nicer 90’s we lived in. The Japanese in this film are not all bad, Jet even gets a Japanese girlfriend (the Sanrio-esque Nakayama Shinobu) and one of his opponents (Yasuaki Kurata, the martial artist who lists to the left) is genuinely admirable as a fighting man of the world.

The visuals are nothing short of stunning. The image of Jet Li in Japanese schoolboy uniform, hair ground down into a severe buzz is so graphically audacious that it sears the screen, and the framing has a crisp, geometric style that matches his isosceles widow's peak. Gorgeously studio-bound, the sets are austere, stark and color-designed to within an inch of their lives. As combatants clash, rich golden and red paper leaves swirl around them, falling from a papier mache birch. Like inhaling pure oxygen, its purity is an intoxicant. It's a pared-down, stripped-away, pedal-to-the-metal lacerating affair, and one of Jet Li’s best. Make no mistake about it: this movie will fry your eggs.
