Director: Gordon Chan
A stunning reinvention of Bruce Lee's timeless 1972 classic, Fist of Fury, Fist of Legend is considered by mandy to be the greatest Kung Fu movie of all time! Jet Li plays Chen Zhen - the matchless student of China's preeminent Kung Fu master, Fok Yun-gap. Upon returning home to Japanese-occupied Shanghai after a period of study abroad, Zhen is devastated to discover that his beloved master has been mysteriously killed - allegedly in a challenge match with a member of the Japanese Black Dragon Clan. Disgusted by the official verdict on his teacher's death, Chen embarks on a heroic one-man quest to uncover the true killer - a journey that will bring him into deadly confrontation with Japan's most formidable fighters.
Showcasing exceptional action-choreography from the ace martial arts director of The Matrix Trilogy & Kill Bill, Fist of Legend is a brilliant masterpiece that has been awarded iconic status by fans across the world.

Professional Review of "Fist Of Legend (DVD) (UK Version)"

If movies were dogs, Fist of Legend would be a Doberman Pinscher: a sleek, black juggernaut with its ears taped back. A remake of Bruce Lee's Fists of Fury (mistakenly called The Chinese Connection overseas), Fist of Legend is a styling call for the downtrodden to rise up against their oppressors. Faithful to its source, the year is 1921 and Jet Li plays a student of the Jingwu Mun school whose Master Huo dies at the hands of the occupying Japanese while Jet is studying abroad. He returns to the Jingwu Mun, in the throes of a leadership crisis, and before you know it he's on the trail of the murderer. If this was Sherlock Holmes, hed be casting footprints, poring over train schedules, and listening to alibis. But its Jet Li, and his investigatory method involves multiple, gravity-defying kicks, and fists that piston like blurs. The action is of the wire fu and heroic pose school, choreographed and executed by Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix) and his stunt maniacs whore in full effect here as bodies snap, crack, and hit the mat at 800 RPMs. Fist of Legend is a high point in HKSAR action choreography, with fights unfolding in empty arenas and courtyards, giving it all a precise, unadulterated feel. The narrative is surprisingly clear, and it charges ahead on all eight cylinders. While the film sticks closely to Bruce Lee's storyline (even the funeral portrait of Master Hou is the same), director Gordon Chan and company manage to update things for the nicer 90s we lived in. The Japanese in this film are not all bad, Jet even gets a Japanese girlfriend (the Sanrio-esque Nakayama Shinobu) and one of his opponents (Yasuaki Kurata, the martial artist who lists to the left) is genuinely admirable as a fighting man of the world. The visuals are nothing short of stunning. The image of Jet Li in Japanese schoolboy uniform, hair ground down into a severe buzz is so graphically audacious that it sears the screen, and the framing has a crisp, geometric style that matches his isosceles widow's peak. Gorgeously studio-bound, the sets are austere, stark and color-designed to within an inch of their lives. As combatants clash, rich golden and red paper leaves swirl around them, falling from a papier mache birch. Like inhaling pure oxygen, its purity is an intoxicant. It's a pared-down, stripped-away, pedal-to-the-metal lacerating affair, and one of Jet Lis best. Make no mistake about it: this movie will fry your eggs. by Grady Hendrix |

THIS IS JET AT HIS BEST, IT IS ONE OF THE BEST FOR A LONG TIME. THE CAMERA WORK IS BRILLIANT, THE FIGHT SCENES BREATHTAKING,TOTALY FLAT OUT ACTION,AND HAVING SEEN FIST OF FURY 23 YEARS AGO I THINK THAT THIS IS A BETTER FILM, BUT NOT QUITE AS GOOD AS TWIN WARRIORS, STILL MY FAVORITE AND JETS BEST TO DATE |
