Fist of Legend

YesAsia Editorial Description

Jet Li takes up the mantle of Bruce Lee's angry avenger in a remake of Fist of Fury! The Fearless kung fu king tackles the celebrated tales of Huo Yuanjia's disciple Chen Zhen, who was himself a legendary martial artist. Li produces as well as stars in the 1994 film from director Gordon Chan and action choreographer Yuen Woo Ping, which many critics and fans have given their thumbs up and agreed to be the masterpiece that represents Li at his peak in terms of power and agility. Surrounding Li is a great cast that includes Chin Siu Ho, Ada Choi, Billy Chow, Paul Chun, Kurata Yasuaki, and Nakayama Shinobu. Sixteen years later, Gordon Chan and Infernal Affairs director Andrew Lau are currently shooting a new Chen Zhen movie with Donnie Yen, and it would complete a trilogy of films about the iconic character portrayed by three generations of action superstars.

Director: Gordon Chan

Various world powers bullied China in the early years of the Republic. Chan Chun, who is studying in Japan, hears of his martial art master Fok Yuan-kap's death in a duel and hurries back to find out how the master was killed. In the process, he becomes the enemy of the Black Dragon Gang and the Hong Kou Gang. It turns out that, after the Japanese occupied Shanghai, a Japanese attach posed as a member of the Hong Kou Gang to challenge the Superb Martial School and killed Master Fok.

Back at the Superb Martial Clique, Chan wants to help Fok's son Ting-yan to revitalise the Clique. However, Chan is too brilliant for Ting-yan's liking and they are not on good terms. The fact that Chan is in love with a Japanese woman is also against him. Chan has to leave. The Japanese attach returns to challenge the Clique. To save the Clique, Ting-yan puts his jealousy for Chan aside and teaches him the secret martial art of the Fok family, Fist Enigma. Chan and Ting-yan fight the Japanese challenger and kill him after a fierce fight, but the death of the Japanese threatens to lead to war with Japan. Chan bravely shoulders all responsibility. Ting-yan manages to negotiate to let Chan fake the execution. Chan then changes his name and travels to all parts of China, helping the people to fight invasion.

Professional Review of "Fist of Legend"

April 9, 2008

If movies were dogs, Fist of Legend would be a Doberman Pinscher: a sleek, black juggernaut with its ears taped back. A remake of Bruce Lee's Fists of Fury (mistakenly called The Chinese Connection overseas), Fist of Legend is a styling call for the downtrodden to rise up against their oppressors. Faithful to its source, the year is 1921 and Jet Li plays a student of the Jingwu Mun school whose Master Huo dies at the hands of the occupying Japanese while Jet is studying abroad. He returns to the Jingwu Mun, in the throes of a leadership crisis, and before you know it he's on the trail of the murderer. If this was Sherlock Holmes, he’d be casting footprints, poring over train schedules, and listening to alibis. But it’s Jet Li, and his investigatory method involves multiple, gravity-defying kicks, and fists that piston like blurs. The action is of the wire fu and heroic pose school, choreographed and executed by Yuen Woo-ping (The Matrix) and his stunt maniacs who’re in full effect here as bodies snap, crack, and hit the mat at 800 RPMs. Fist of Legend is a high point in HKSAR action choreography, with fights unfolding in empty arenas and courtyards, giving it all a precise, unadulterated feel.

The narrative is surprisingly clear, and it charges ahead on all eight cylinders. While the film sticks closely to Bruce Lee's storyline (even the funeral portrait of Master Hou is the same), director Gordon Chan and company manage to update things for the nicer 90’s we lived in. The Japanese in this film are not all bad, Jet even gets a Japanese girlfriend (the Sanrio-esque Nakayama Shinobu) and one of his opponents (Yasuaki Kurata, the martial artist who lists to the left) is genuinely admirable as a fighting man of the world.

The visuals are nothing short of stunning. The image of Jet Li in Japanese schoolboy uniform, hair ground down into a severe buzz is so graphically audacious that it sears the screen, and the framing has a crisp, geometric style that matches his isosceles widow's peak. Gorgeously studio-bound, the sets are austere, stark and color-designed to within an inch of their lives. As combatants clash, rich golden and red paper leaves swirl around them, falling from a papier mache birch. Like inhaling pure oxygen, its purity is an intoxicant. It's a pared-down, stripped-away, pedal-to-the-metal lacerating affair, and one of Jet Li’s best. Make no mistake about it: this movie will fry your eggs.
