If it's already hard enough trying to make an exciting kung fu movie with a low budget, try making a futuristic kung fu film with a low budget. Of course, it helps that director Nakata Kei is an expert of Hong Kong Cinema, writing books about it, as well as appearing in Hong Kong films like Extreme Crisis and When I Look Upon the Stars. With a go-for-broke spirit, Nakata was determined to break the inherent budgetary restraints in such genre meshings with Fist: The Future Kung Fu. Action actor Funaki Ikki (Confessions of a Dog) and Sugata Shun (The Last Samurai, Tokyo Gore Police) lead the way as futuristic warriors fighting for freedom in an entertaining film that makes up for its reduced budget with plenty of exciting fight scenes.
It's the year 2059, and pollution has turned water into a valuable resource. Using the security of water supply as an excuse, the oppressive Japanese government has built an intricate security system to keep the water from the people. Masaki (Funaki Ikki), a former lawmaker who is now in exile, returns to Japan to free the Japanese citizens from the government's iron grip. With the help of a rebel organization and his master, Masaki trains to break into the water plant and fights his enemies in the name of freedom.
