Will leave you hungering for more! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
In "Flavor of Happiness", department store representative Takako (Nakatani Miki) is tasked with persuading restaurant owner Wang (Fuji Tatsuya) to offer pre-packaged versions of his restaurant meals for sale through the department store. Curmudgeonly Wang gives a chilly rebuff to the proposal, but Takako persists in returning to Wang's Little Shanghai restaurant and pressing her request. With each visit to the restaurant, she orders a different meal. As she watches Wang's diligence in preparing the food and savors the delectable flavors of Wang's dishes, she is reminded of her days as a child at the feet of her father, a chef in a Western restaurant. When Wang suffers a crippling stroke, Takako quits her department store job and pleads with Wang to teach her how to prepare his meals so that she can carry on the operation of the treasured little restaurant.

So begins a pair of intertwined journeys, as Wang connects both with his past during a trip to his hometown of Shaoxing, China, and with his future altered life in which he no longer can be self-reliant. And Takako undertakes a journey out of brokenness and grief into a future that is married to her past.

Nakatani Miki quite literally shines in this movie. Her face is so strikingly expressive that it sometimes seems as if she is overacting when she actually is doing almost no acting at all. The emotions simply pour out of her. Fuji Tatsuya does a capable job as old Wang, although his looks are prototypically Japanese and his Chinese language skills are rudimentary. The uncredited co-star in this film is all the delicious food we see prepared by Wang and Takako. Trust me, "Flavor of Happiness" will leave you hungering both for these tasty dishes and for more delightful films like this one.
