YesAsia Editorial Description
Comedy kingpin Stephen Chow rules all in Flirting Scholar, a deliriously wacky and wildly entertaining period comedy with an all-star cast! Tong Pak Fu (Stephen Chow) is a famed scholar whose paintings and poetry are the toast of the intellectual set. But Tong Pak Fu is cursed with a harem of shrill wives, who only care for gambling or squeezing money from their successful husband. New love arrives when Tong Pak Fu spies Chou Heung (the radiant Gong Li), a lovely maiden who favors him with three enchanting smiles on three separate occasions. Smitten, Tong Pak Fu pretends to be a lowly servant named Wah On, and enters Chou Heung's household to be close to her. But the head of the house (Shaw Brothers kung-fu princess Cheng Pei Pei) despises Tong Pak Fu, making every day a dangerous one. Can Tong Pak Fu use his sly wit and insane kung-fu skills to win Chou Heung's heart?
Stephen Chow delivers a manic comic performance that's simultaneously charming, self-deprecating, and over-the-top hilarious, as he battles wily foes (including kung-fu star Gordon Lau) and silly situations to obtain his heart's desire! Flirting Scholar is a breathless and rapid-fire nonsense comedy based on the same classic tale that inspired the Shaw Brothers Huangmei Opera The Three Smiles.

Middling Stephen Chow comedy
Middling Stephen Chow comedy

I have tried and tried to embrace "Flirting Scholar", but for me the the movie falls flat. Stephen Chow plays Tong Pak Fu, a great scholar and artist whose merest scribble is worth a fortune. While Tong is married to eight beautiful brides, his wives are a quarreling, gambling bunch having no appreciation of his talents. Consequently, Tong travels with his buddies -- known collectively as the Four Heavenly Kings (wink, wink) -- in search of more amiable female companionship. On one of his gambols with his pals, Tong encounters and is smitten by Chou Heung (Gong Li), a servant in a wealthy household. Tong decides to become the lowest of lowly servants in the same household in order to pursue his love for Chou Heung. What follows are a series of comic humiliations for Tong as he endeavors to catch the eye, and the favor, of the object of his affection. "Flirting Scholar" features many of the hijinks we expect from a Stephen Chow movie and is laced with an assortment of bits steeped in Chinese operatic styles. Unfortunately, Gong Li was terribly miscast in this role. While she certainly has the glamorous looks for the part, she has no feel for the film's comedy and develops no romantic chemistry with Chow; one wonders whether her minimal Cantonese language skills allowed for much communication with her castmates. Consequently, "Flirting Scholar" seems hollow at its core. |

An Excellent Early Chow Movie
An Excellent Early Chow Movie

One of the Better early Chow Sing Chi works, Flirting Scholar tells of the story of Artist Tong Pak Fu, An artist and Scholar so revered, that many scholars and officials would fight over the contents of his Rubbish Bin! Despite having Wealth, Success, Fame, Talent and Eight Beautiful Wives, Fu is a very Unhappy man, why? his eight wives are all gambling addicts who have no respect for the cultured and intellectual man that he is, and would rather play Dice or Mahjong than spend time with him. Whenever Fu has a chance to go on a trip, he has the time of his life, anything is better than staying at home with his wives, so when he has a chance to go on an excursion with the other Three Heavenly Scholars (Think the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop) he relishes it. On his latest trip, he meets a lovely girl Chou Heung (Gong Li) who is a handmaiden for Local Matriarch Madam Wah (Cheng Pei Pei). Realising he can't win her heart as a Scholar, he goes undercover as a poor labourer, where he soon finds out that while Chou Heung is uninterested in him, she is a great admirer of the Works of Tong Pak Fu, but when he tells her his identity, she refuses to believe him, but this only makes Fu more desperate to win her heart... For a Stephen Chow Sing Chi movie of this vintage, this film is incredibly funny and boasts quite lavish sets and costumes, and i would recommend it for those wanting to see the pre-Shaolin Soccer CGI Stephen Chow in action. |

Don't particularly find this a very funny film but I like the witty songs and rhymes. Stephen Chow and Gori Li both acted well. |
