YesAsia Editorial Description
Flowers open in 1936 with the story of Rin (Aoi Yu), an aspiring writer being forced by her overbearing father to marry someone she doesn't love. With little choice, she decides to run away from home. Meanwhile, Kaoru (Takeuchi Yuko) goes out on a day at the seaside with her loving husband in 1964, though the day means more to her than just another day out. In 1969, tough-as-nails Midori (Tanaka Rena) tries to make it in her publishing house job despite her misogynistic co-workers and a slow-working author, though she finds herself at the crossroads when a suitor asks for her hand in marriage. A few years later, Sato (Nakama Yukie) is a woman on the verge of making a life-and-death choice that will change her family forever. The consequences of her choice continues to be felt in 2009, when sisters Kana (Suzuki Kyoka) and Kei (Hirosue Ryoko) reunite at a family funeral.

Product Information
FLOWERS is a portrait of six women from three different generation, each living their own journey in their respective periods, spanning decades od dramatic changes in Japan from the 1930's to the present.
Spring 1936.Rin (Yu Aoi)is about to be wed to man she's never met, arranged by her stern father according to traditional custom. As a progressive thinker, Rin harbors doubts about the restrictive life of a woman in her time and runs away on her wedding day...
Summer in the 1960s. Rin has three grown daughters. the eldest, Kaoru (Yuko Takeuchi), tries to recover from the trauma of losing her husband in a car accident. while the second daughters, Midori (Rena Tanaka) is a feminist wavering between her professional career and the prospect of marriage. The youngest, Sato (Yukie Nakama), has a heart condition, and braces for her own death as she prepares to give birth to her second child. The journey of the three women are set against the backdrop of the rapid economic growth of postwar Japan.
It's winter in the present day. Sato's elder daughter, Kana (Kyoka Suzuki),has moved to Tokyo to pursue her dream of beoming a pianist while being pregnant with a man who's just dumped her.The younger daughter,Kei (Ryoko Hirosue), is married with a child, and always wears a smile. There's a reason for her cheerful exuberance, though - she's determined to live with her mother she had never met.

As I understand it, the six actresses who star in "Flowers" all serve as spokeswomen for a Shiseido shampoo product. A marketing whiz decided that it would be great to cast them all together in a film based upon the theme of women's strength. Presto, we get "Flowers", a cinematic concoction that feels like the result of such a process. Six wonderful actresses may be terrific for an ad campaign, but, unfortunately, there just isn't enough for all of them to do in this movie. Fortunately, the cinematography (and the actresses) are so stunningly gorgeous that you likely will enjoy it anyway. Rin (Aoi Yu) is a willful daughter set up for an arranged marriage she doesn't want by her headstrong father. Naturally, daddy-daughter sparks fly. Rin has three daughters, Kaoru (Takeuchi Yuko), Midori (Tanaka Rena), and Sato (Nakama Yukie). Kaoru struggles to overcome the untimely death of her husband. Midori must choose between a career she enjoys and the advances of a persistent suitor. Sato faces a fateful decision over whether to go through with a pregnancy that may cost her life. Sato has two daughters, Kana (Suzuki Kyoka) and Kei (Hirosue Ryoko). Kana is facing the drying up of her career as a pianist and an out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Kei bears the burden of knowing that her life caused the loss of her mother. Each story is potentially engaging, but all are given too little time for full development. The most satisfying of these stories are those involving the third generation daughters, as they simply are given more screen time. The resolution of the story involving Rin, the family matriarch, is handled beautifully. The second generation daughters' stories are trivialized by the short shrift the movie gives them. As mentioned, the cinematography, which regularly pays tribute to the films of Ozu Yasujiro and Yamada Yoji, is spectacular. I don't think I've ever previously written this about a dramatic film, but "Flowers" definitely is worth watching just to see its astonishing beauty. While the movie would have been improved by eliminating at least a couple of its stories, I am happy to recommend spending these 108 minutes in the company of these fine actresses. |
