YesAsia Editorial Description
A stirring memoir about kamikaze pilots who gave their lives during the war, WWII film For Those We Love, a.k.a. I Go To Die For You, attracted a lot of attention in Japan from the get-go because of its sensitive topic and the participation of renowned writer and outspoken Tokyo governor Ishihara Shintaro. Known for his nationalistic leanings, Ishihara served as producer and screenwriter for the film, adapting his own novel for the big screen. The film is directed by Shinjo Taku (Okinawan Boys) and stars Kubozuka Yosuke (Ping Pong), along with Tsutsui Michitaka (The Crossing), Kishi Keiko (The Twilight Samurai), Tabe Mikako (Night Time Picnic), and Nakamura Tomoya (Rampo Noir).
For Those We Love follows a group of young kamikaze pilots during their final days, as remembered by an elderly restaurant operator who spent time with them before they flew off on their last mission. The film touches on the people whose lives were affected by the pilots, from their families to the townspeople near the military base, and features impressive aerial battle scenes. Though a potential harbor for controversy, this heart-tugging film mainly appeals to universal sentiments about youth, courage, and sacrifice, providing an anthem for the war dead.

Tale of heroism and sacrifice
Tale of heroism and sacrifice

One would expect a film written by ultranationalist Ishihara Shintaro to feature chest-pumping Japanese jingoism. However, "For Those We Love" primarily is a nuanced if sentimental tale of what motivated young men to fly to their deaths as kamikaze pilots. Set in an airbase town in Japan, the film views the war through the eyes of the owner of a traditional Japanese inn. The great (and still lovely) Kishi Keiko stars as the inn's owner and her character acts as a surrogate mother to the young men who pass through that airbase en route to their certain deaths. We learn of the lives of these young men and of the families and lovers they leave behind. Why did Japan pursue this suicidal tactic? A top military leader in the film offers this insane explanation: "This war was about freeing like-colored races in Asia from the white man. This was incontestably correct, a just and valid purpose." The kamikaze tactic offered Japan a chance to gain a negotiated peace; it would allow people like this leader to write the history of the war, thus preserving this deluded view of history. A different explanation was offered to the pilots. They were told that, by sacrificing their lives, they would discourage an invasion of the Japanese homeland by showing that an invasion would be met by "relentless resistance". While the strategy may have succeeded in discouraging invasion, its terrible fruit was the dropping of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. "For Those We Love" is a deeply human film, offering appealing portraits of intrepid young warriors. It contrasts those human portraits with the cold necessities of military command. The film delivers spectacular battle scenes to go along with its heart-tugging stories of heroism and sacrifice. My only significant gripe about the movie is that it runs on too long; its last half hour is set in contemporary Japan, seeking to tie up the loose ends of the lives depicted in the movie. This prolonged coda easily could have been trimmed in half. One doesn't have to be persuaded of the righteousness of the Japanese cause (I certainly wasn't) to find this a very compelling film. |

Touching story, good film

I just finished watching this WW II war movie, and overall I found it quite entertaining. To start with the positive sides about it : -Interesting story about the Kamikaze pilots, and how the last days/hours/seconds went for them. -impressive aerial battles with great CGI effects. -Good acting -Cute girls :D Negative sides: - the movie was a bit slow, and could have been shortened down with 30 minutes. - I think the movie acts too "japanese" in regards to handling. Not that that is a bad thing, but it excludes a broader international audience in my opinion. With that i mean they could have cut out all the typical japanese comedy and screaming. It seems a bit over-acting to foreing viewers. Im used to it though, so for me it's ok, but the people i watched it with thought it was just weird. - Instead of that, they could have added ALOT more action scenes. Too much storytelling for a war movie in my opinion. - Speaking about storytelling, there were too many different stories and people to refer to, so it was easy to lose the thread. Ooops, that became alot of negative views compared to the positives, but overall I liked the movie. It was touching, and left u thinking what those lost souls went through the moments before they died. If i made it though, I would have done a few things different. 8/10 |
