Acclaimed thespians and talented pop stars from both sides of the strait shine in this tragic, romantic tale set in the Tongzhi years of Qing dynasty. The final film from veteran director Pai Ching Jui (The Last Night of Madam China), the 1990 Taiwan costume production features 1980s Hong Kong singer/actors Norman Cheung Lap Kei and Matthew Wong Hin Mung in rare leading roles. They admirably hold their own against veteran co-stars like the multiple-award-winning Mainland actress Siqin Gaowa (as Empress Dowager Cixi), Taiwan actress Kuei Ya Lei, and Hong Kong actors Ku Feng and Chen Hung Lieh (as Li Lianying).

Mr. Sun (Ku Feng) and his two sons Yong Fu (Norman Cheung) and Yong Shou (Matthew Wong) live in harmony in a village outside Beijing. The brothers fall for Lord Man's (Wei Su) only daughter Man Zhu (Wang Yu Ling) living next door, who, as dictated by Manchurian customs, is called up to the imperial palace once she is 18 years old. Hoping to see her once more, Fu follows her into the capital. He meets someone called "Little Knife" Lau, who tells him the only way for him to get into the palace is by "cleansing the body". It's only after the castration does Fu realize that what Lau meant is becoming a eunuch...!
