YesAsia Editorial Description
Ling Bo is yet another legendary actress under the Shaw Brothers. Born in 1939, she joined the Shaw Brothers Studio in 1962, and quickly rose to fame in 1963 with The Love Eterne, winning the Special Award For Outstanding Performance at the Golden Horse Film Awards. In 1966, like in The Love Eterne, Ling Bo took up the male lead in Forever and Ever, despite Shaw Brothers' earlier plan of having her as the female lead. Facing opposition from fans, they finally arranged for her to star as a male student named Xiaowen. Wicked rich man Liu, portrayed by Lo Wei, the director of this film, wants Xiaowen to marry his daughter (Lin Yu) who is suffering from leprosy, thinking that marriage will take away her disease. Although Xiaowen discovers Liu's plan, he is still in love with her and hopes that a miracle will cure her disease...

Timeless tale of true love
Timeless tale of true love

Let me begin by urging anyone considering watching this movie NOT to read any descriptions of the plot of "Forever and Ever" (including those shown elsewhere on this webpage). The movie's central plot twist is so unusual and surprising that it would be a shame to spoil it be unveiling it. This much can be revealed: "Forever and Ever" stars Ivy Ling Bo as a young scholar named Xiaowen who, while travelling to take the examination, is robbed. Lacking funds to continue his journey, Xiaowen finds employment as a scribe at a Buddhist temple. There he meets Liu (Lo Wei), a devious rich man who believes that Xiaowen will make the perfect husband for his lovely daughter (professional dancer Lin Yu). Penniless Xiaowen is shocked to receive such an offer, but, encouraged by the temple's abbot, agrees to the arrangement. Xiaowen then is befuddled by his new bride's request that they wait a year to consummate their relationship, but, having a generous spirit, he accepts the condition. When he finally learns the reason for his wife's apparent modesty, Xiaowen's hopes and dreams are thrown into turmoil. "Forever and Ever" is gorgeous to see. Beautifully staged and decorated, the film boasts some of the most sumptuous costuming I've seen. Its melodrama is rich and multi-layered and its depiction of the self-sacrificing celibate love between Xiaowen and his wife is movingly profound. As usual, the Huangmei opera music is a treat. Ling Bo's performance is masterful; by this point in her career, she was able to carry off a male role with great conviction. Lo Wei fully inhabits the role of the wealthy man who lacks scruples but loves his daughter. Lin Yu came as a surprise to me. In early scenes, she appears a bit stiff, but as the story develops she does a marvelous job of bringing her tortured character to life. "Forever and Ever" merits its timeless title; it really is that good. |
