導演︰五社英雄
Director: Gosha Hideo

The early 1930's. Manchuria is in the occupation of Japan when the League of Nations rejected their proposal for non-racial discrimination. This led to Japan walking out of the League of Nations. On the home islands severe famine wracked the countryside. The Depression, tariffs, boycotts and widespread unemployment contributed to the growing sense of futility and anger at those who manipulated events to line their own pockets. A group of junior officers decided to wipe out the corrupt elements and ask his majesty to form a new government headed by dedicated military men who would bring justice and good government to all. The young rebels marched through the bitterly cold snow that blanketed Tokyo. They steeled themselves for what would follow, never imagining that their rendezvous with history would end as it did...

Not your typical Gosha film Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
"Four Days of Snow and Blood" depicts the events of February 26-29, 1936, when a small group of young, ultranationalist military officers commanding 1,400 troops attempted a coup d'etat of the Japanese government. The film is quite a departure for director Gosha Hideo. Gosha loved to weave complex tales filled with plots within plots. In "Four Days", Gosha's hands are tied by the need to present actual historical events.

From a dramatic standpoint, one of the problems Gosha faced is that the attempted coup is inherently anticlimactic; it begins with a bang and ends with a whimper, as the officers' effort falls apart. The film opens with a tense meeting among the officers, as they agree to undertake their coup (under the fairly telling slogan of "Whether insanity or idiocy, headlong we hurtle"). It then shows the officers' attempt to decapitate the government by murdering key governmental officials. After the excitement of these opening scenes, the film winds down as the establishment forces align against the officers to foil the attempted coup. In the end, their troops lose heart and the officers simply give up.

Gosha presents the officers as tragic heroes, a perspective that is controversial, to say the least. Indeed, in a manner that is uncharacteristic of Gosha's cinematic style, he employs gooey sentimentality to depict the officer's willingness to sacrifice their family lives to their cause. Some might argue that the young officers sought idealistic ends, i.e., to end corruption in government and commerce and bring about social order in the depths of the Great Depression. (The film omits to mention that another one of their objectives was aggressive foreign expansion of the Japanese empire.) However, those idealistic ends seem like nothing more than empty slogans given the officers' fostering of more disorder through their use of deadly violence, their willingness to directly disobey the Emperor (whom they claimed to represent), and their all-too-apparent ignorance of how to achieve their ends.

"Four Days of Snow and Blood" provides an interesting glimpse into a fascinating page of Japanese history. Apart from its sentimentality, the film is very skillfully made. I can recommend the film highly, but hope that viewers will seek more objective sources of information about his unhappy event.
