I'm only in my mid-twenties. Frances does not seem to be the kind of singers people my age would like. I went to both of Fai Wong's concerts in 1998 and 99 and at that time I did not fully understand how people would often praise the beautiful voice that Frances has. There was one song that really caught my attention though, which was "Hung An" where Frances held those beautiful high and long notes. As I am now getting older I begin to be able to appreciate the high quality of singing that singers like Frances, Teresa Carpio and Deanie Ip have. Deanie is my favourite singer, who is so jazzy and classy, but her unique voice may not be what most people call beautiful, while Frances does have a voice that is undoutedly pleasant and delightful. It is really an enjoyment to listen to her in concert. Though I did not attend this concert personally I can feel the power and beauty of her voice through this LIVE CD. I also like the musical arrangement by the Phil Orchestra a lot! The only song that I felt Frances could have improved on was "Evergreen" originally recorded by Barbara Streisand. You would notice that Frances sung it at a much lower key, which sounded OK with her vocal range, but I think she could have handled it at one to two keys higher, which would make it sound more powerful and exciting! |

I have always admired Frances Yip's fine voice. Here she tackles English, Mandarin & Cantonese songs & makes them all her own. She has a class & sophistication that places her heads & shoulders above the other Hong Kong singers. You should also buy the vcds or the dvd of this concert as the only way to fully appreciate Frances is to watch her in action. In the 70s & 80s, she was billed as Asia's Leading Lady Of Song. In my opinion, she is now much more than that. She is now Asia's treasure! |
