August 3, 2010 Two songs remained etched in memoryI can't remember the story or acting, but I had an LP vinyl record of the songs in the early 1970s and 2 songs remained etched in memory -- Hsui Hsien (Narciscus flower) and Meeting in the Old Place. I have lost the LP so I'm buying this DVD to re-live my youth.

The Dream Of The Red Chamber

August 3, 2010 The songs are soulful and unforgettableEven today, after more than 30 years, I still listen to the songs, especially the Flower Burial. Most Shaw songs are unforgettable, and the songs here are among the best. Forget about those tuneless songs of later versions of Dream of the Red Chamber, esp those longwinded series from China. This Shaw Brothers version is tightly edited, fast-paced and full of pathos.

Killer Clans
August 3, 2010 Best-ever swordfighting movieThis is the best-ever of the Shaw Brothers' series of sword-play movies of the 1960s-1970s. You will enjoy the various plot twists, and the acting generates the right amount of tension.

Lady General Hua Mu Lan
July 11, 2010 Best-ever movieI watched the movie in 1964 when I was a secondary school kid. Now, I'm watching the VCD version of the movie; and after more than 40 years I think it is still the best!
Lin Po's acting is artistic and moving, and the songs are melodious and memorable, far better than the songs in the Kingdom & the Beauty.
And long after we have forgotten the plasticky Disney's Mulan and the blood-cuddling Vicky Zhao movie, Lin Po's movie will continue to give pleasure to all movie lovers.
