Fried Dragon Fish provides an early glimpse of two of the greatest luminaries of contemporary Japanese cinema - acclaimed director Iwai Shunji (Swallowtail Butterfly and All About Lily Chou-Chou) and everyone's favorite actor Asano Tadanobu. Aired in 1993, this offbeat television movie hints of what's to come for both Iwai and Asano. A younger and thinner Asano first caught the critics' eyes with his charismatic performance in Fried Dragon Fish, while Iwai sprinkles the film with the beautiful bursts of vibrant visuals that characterize his later works.

Hyperactive databank operator Poo (Yoshimoto Miyoko) takes up detective work when a rare and expensive red dragon fish is stolen. Her investigation leads her to oddball fish collector Natsuro (Asano Tadanobu). She takes an immediate liking to the mysterious Natsuro, but their burgeoning relationship keeps getting interrupted by assassins. It seems that the outwardly mild Natsuro is not only connected to the stolen fish, but also capable of sudden bouts of violence.
