YesAsia Editorial Description
Richard Ng, possibly the only actor in history who can claim to have upstaged Jackie Chan (Miracles), Sammo Hung (Millionaire's Express), and Michelle Yeoh (Magnificent Warriors) with his comedic mugging, takes center stage in this tongue-in-cheek crime caper from 1986 produced by Sammo Hung and directed by Philip Chan (best known for his appearances in Police Story 3: Supercop and Hard Boiled). Elaborate martial arts stunt work was practically a prerequisite for 1980s Hong Kong cinema, and From Here to Prosperity has its share, but the main attraction is Ng's wacky charm and superb comedic timing. Although he never achieved Stephen Chow-levels of success, the seventy-plus films Ng appeared in throughout the 1980s and 90s constitute one of the greatest legacies of Hong Kong comedy.
Set in 1950s Thailand, From Here to Prosperity follows the adventures of a wily detective (Ng) and his cohorts, who are contracted by the daughter of a slain fellow investigator to take revenge on her father's killer, who sells stolen jewels on the black market. In an elaborate insurance fraud scheme, the crook plans the theft of his own merchandise, but Ng and company steal the jewels out from under him. A deal is cut for the return of the priceless diamonds, but Ng is far from through with his grand scheme to make a monkey of his adversary.
