Excellent concept and singing Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Fei has added another good recording to his collection of albums released over the years. When I first looked at the inner sleeves of the album, the concept of oldies was clearly represented in its packaging. The information booklet has yellow stains throughout the pages clearly sets the stage of expectation that these are oldies from the 1940s. A few surprises greeted me - first Fei chooses to re-record songs number 4, 5 and 7 again! Fei has done very excellent recordings in the mid eighties while he had recorded these under the Tony Wong labels. Likewise, the previous album song "He ri Jun chai lai" was also a re-recorded piece. Somehow, I still prefer his previous recordings when the musical accompaniment was sparse and it really capitalized on his earlier rich voice in the eighties. This time, the music takes on a slightly heavy taste of live band accompaniment. Somehow it sounds still good but I still prefer his previous recordings. The rest of the songs are new ones and Fei has intrepreted for the first time on albums. I must say that the reading of these materials are just as good as Tsai Chin. The "Wandering songstress" sounds strange when intrepreted by a male vocalist. I have never listen to any male artiste covering version of this song over the past twenty years. Well, it is refreshing but just feeling strange. On the whole, this project is a well conceptualized and skillfully executed by Fei Yu Ching. I suggest that you can get this album if you like old and golden songs of the shanghai era. There are not many artistes who can record such good gems with a flavour of their own, setting new standards and yet retaining the rich interpretation of the past. Get this for your collection and spin it at night to feel the emergence of the past nostalgic era.....
