Working with the elderly has never been quite as weird as it is in director Takigawa Chisui's unconventional supernatural romantic comedy,
Fukumimi! Released in Japanese theatres in 2003, this winning film, also known by the English title
Lucky Ears, stars Kudo Kankuro (
Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World). He plays Satonaka, a regular Joe who finds himself the victim of a bizarre turn of events on his very first day on the job! When Satonaka becomes smitten with a beautiful nurse (Takano Shiho), he takes on a position as a kitchen worker in a retirement center just to get closer to her. On his first day, he ends up talking to a weird old man (Tanaka Kunie, from
The Hidden Blade). Shortly thereafter, Satonaka learns that the elderly gentleman's name was Fujiwara - with a definite emphasis on "was." Why the past tense? Because he's dead!
Later, when Satonaka looks in the mirror, he is shocked to discover Fujiwara's face looking back at him! It seems the old man's ghost has taken possession of Kudo's body! As the film reveals, Fujiwara has come back from the grave to pick up where he left off, trying to win the affections of Kanzaki (Tsukasa Yoko, from Samurai Rebellion), a good-looking retiree that he had fallen in love with back when his soul occupied the land of living. But just as Fujiwara thinks he can win her heart using Satonaka's body, he finds that things aren't going to be quite that easy, as the two mismatched sprits must come face-to-face with a few other crazy geriatrics that have absolutely no problem thwarting their goals. Among this wacky crowd is a goofy retired naval officer (Sakagami Jiro, Taboo) and a hilariously fey transvestite (Takarada Akira, fromGodzilla: Final Wars) Will Fujiwara succeed in his otherworldly goals? And will Satonaka find love of his own? Find out in this wonderfully comic exploration of love, life, and death, nominated for an International Fantasy Film Award for Best Film at the 2004 Fantasporto Film Festival!
