Ringo Lam brings a riveting intensity and astounding complexity to Full Alert, a seemingly routine cop thriller that becomes so much more in the hands of the master director. Lam paints fully-realized portraits of his two lead protagonists, revealing characters that are more gray than black or white. Considered one of the best Hong Kong films of 1997, Full Alert received awards for both Best Picture and Best Actor (for Sean Lau Ching Wan) from the Hong Kong Film Critics Society.

Excellent HK Action/Drama Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
This little known action/drama from Hong Kong director Ringo Lam features fine performances, expert direction, and a natural style that may be more appealing to those who are turned off by more well known and off-the-wall HK fare. Lau Ching-wan plays the tenacious Officer Pao, and he's on to Mak Kwan (played with subtle gusto by Francis Ng), a known criminal who is planning to rob the Hong Kong Jockey Club. In cahoots with a gang from China, Mak Kwan must avoid the cops at all costs if his plan is to succeed. This setup, while not eliciting copious amounts of action, leads to some excellent character development. Officer Pao, married with a young son, is dedicated without being a total loose cannon. Hints of naivete when he is confronted with tough choices and setbacks also add to his character. Mak Kwan, being a true sympathetic villain rather than a hardened master criminal, also has his reasons for doing what he does. Also featuring amazingly tense moments of conflict as well as a standout car chase through the streets of Hong Kong, Full Alert is a prime example of downbeat, complex cinema that also comments on the 1997 changeover to China. Highly recommended!

Hong Kong Heat Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Solid entertainment with Lau Ching Wan (does this guy make bad films?) as a cop becoming ever more obsessed with catching his quarry - professional robber Francis Ng. Combining thoughtful reflection with action - a great car chase through Hong Kong, probably filmed ilegally and a tense heist at the Hong Kong Jockey club supply the action high-points - the film culminates in a none too cheerful ending. Difficult to understand why this film is not better known, as it's just as good as some of the better known Hong Kong actioners and can hardly fail to succeed with two leading stars of such quality. Not to be missed. The English sub-titles are a-ok by the way.
