YesAsia Editorial Description

One of the great classics of Hong Kong action cinema, 1992's Full Contact reunites Chow Yun Fat with director Ringo Lam for their 5th collaboration together, and it's their most explosive one. Lam directs the action with intense energy, to the point of even developing a new technique called the "bullet cam" to capture the exciting gunfights.

Taking a rare anti-hero role, Chow plays Jeff, a thief double-crossed by his two partners (played by Simon Yam and Anthony Wong) after a jewelry store robbery. Left for dead, Jeff seeks revenge against those that wronged him with the tool he knows best - his gun.

Professional Review of "Full Contact (DVD) (Multi-audio) (US Version)"

July 11, 2003

This professional review refers to Full Contact (DTS Version)
A particle physics experiment in baroque atrocity,Full Contact records what happens when quarks, quasars, hitmen, and psychopathic killers collide in the sweaty Skinner box of the arms dealing, flesh-peeling underworld. A seedy slither through Thailand, the general Hong Kong fear of strange places is in full effect. Thailand isn't the sunny land of white beaches and blue lagoons the chamber of commerce would have you believe, but a skanky hole where guys get their heads rolled up in car windows and families get blown away by emotionally unbalanced thieves. Ringo Lam's least popular movie in Hong Kong is his most popular movie overseas. With a carnivalesque atmosphere that pulls you into two-fisted tale of cursed survival.

In a bravura opening, gay dandy saboteur and assassin Judge (Simon Yam) rips off a set of gold Buddhas from a jewelry shop. On hand assistance is provided by .50 caliber machine gun toting human muscle, Deano, and panty-flashing, gum-smacking tart, Virgin (Bonnie Fu). The trio cut out a shopgirl's heart (set your audio track when you get to this point - on one track it's inaudible, on the other it sounds like shredding bone), pump the customers full of lead, and hit the road in a souped-up Chevy Malibu.

Chow Yun-fat, somewhat porky, plays Jeff, a nightclub bouncer having a romance with taxi dancer, Ann Bridgewater. He hangs out with partner and hanger-on, Anthony Wong, who happens to have this cousin, see? And his cousin wants to pull off a big job together, see? And his cousin's name is Judge...uh-oh. Things get twisted and dark at this point, playing out a nightmare noir scenario. However, we'll never see the notorious eye-gouging scene in which Anthony Wong gives Judge Jeff's eyes and Judge pops one in his mouth. The most you'll see is Anthony carrying something out of the house where he has his last meeting with Jeff. It's wet and it drips - looks like eyes to me. This has been trimmed from every print, but its shadow hangs there in Anthony's hand, a testament to how out there Lam can get when the mood strikes him.

But it's not the lavish blood and guts on display that makes the movie such an arresting experience. It could be the baroque characters and the straight-ahead psycho plotline, but there's something curdling beneath the surface that is the curse of Chow Yun-fat. Looked at in the right light one realizes that Chow's Jeff is the typical action hero - he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. But think about it: what kind of a toll does this take? Ringo Lam thinks about it, setting up Jeff as a tragic figure, destined to outlive his family, friends, lovers and even his own battered body. Triumphant? Perhaps. But also cursed. They don't call Ringo Lam the dark-faced god for nothing.

Hard core excitement from Ringo Lam. Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Full Contact (1992) was a no holds barred action film from one of my favorite film makers Ringo Lam. Shot in Thailand (S.E. Asia's wild, wild west),
a honorable gangster (Chow Yun-Fat) is minding his own business (running his club) until one day his friend (Anthony Wong Chau Sang)runs a foul with some local loan sharks. Being a true friend he helps him out but the two of them get into even more trouble than one could ever imagine. In order to get out of their troubles, the two decide to work together with an unstable psycho (Simon Yam) and his crew (Bonnie Fu and Frankie Chin).
Everything goes along smoothly until.....

Full Contact has been re-released and restored for the first time on video and it has never looked better. The movie is presented uncut and it looks fantastic. This is the film that Ringo Lam will always be remembered for. A true hardcore classic with enough gore, blood and gunplay to keep action fans happy. Ann Bridgewater co-stars as Chow's girlfriend.

Highly recommended.
