Professional Review of "Funny Face"

January 15, 2003

Gigi Leung has improved in her dynamic vocal; it’s funny how her face doesn’t reveal to us that her voice is quietly powerful as in “Funny Face.” She doesn’t sing especially hard or airy, so her vocal lacks emotion and don’t expect too many wrong notes as “auto-tune” ought to do the job. But, her voice is sweet, soothing and digestible, easy-listening. Many of her slip-ups are covered by background voices, especially where her rhythm is a little funny and when she cuts her notes off.

Some tracks are well composed while others are simply horrible. Too many of them lack a sensible lyrical beat, trying to fit too many characters within one line of the melody; this becomes a sloppy song as in Track 3. The chorus is good, but the verses are just unnecessary in its verbosity. The falsetto parts written in certain tracks are very good and appropriate. In Track 4, Leung does a fantastic performance displaying a high and low range, hitting low notes during the drops of the verses and then rising and clinging to falsetto notes during the chorus. Her vibrato still needs to develop more though.

The production is admirable; lots of thought put into it, and lots of cute parts as in Track 9 with the double beat and serenading guitar. Mostly modern arrangements and some hip-hop segments make this album less traditional and more pop.

Track 1. At the first listen, you don’t really think much of this album; it’s pretty common but the good thing about it is that it’s the most easy-listening track that you can listen to over and over again. It’s also refreshing, so when you’re done with the last track, you’re ready to start over.

Track 8. This is something new and different for Leung, sort of a kickback British rock song. The beginning verses are catchy, bluesy, and jazzy in its key changes. The falsetto is very nice and the scooping guitar is a brilliant contrast to the distorted bass, although the bass is kind of nasty-sounding. The beat of the prechorus and first three notes of the chorus just catch you especially when sung in such a high fluty tone. You’ll enjoy this mysterious, mellow Valen Hsu-like track.

Track 9. Right after the gloominess of Track 8, the producers throw in double beats in separate channels that revamp the mood and keep the album moving. The strings and guitar are just sweet compliments to her vocal that is also very fitting, as the song is a quiet ballad.

Track 10. Leung or Craig David? She does a terrific job staying on beat for this song, and her intonation is very good. Not an easy song to sing, but she does a terrific job. The racing of verse lines and double beats in drops make the song catchy and urban.

Jesse’s Junction:

This is not really an extraordinary album, nor does it have any coherent theme in its music style and melodies, but worthwhile to listen to Leung’s explorative talent.

Best Song: Track 9
Best Vocal: Track 4
Best Production: Tracks 1, 8, 9
Best Composition: Track 8
Radioworthy: Tracks 1, 3, 8, 9

Jesse’s Advice:

Spin her around on your system, and you’ll find yourself satisfied.

Awesome!!!!!!!!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I should have given a perfect 10 for this album but instead I had decided to raise it to perfect 100 score!! Why? Let's see...................... This album consists of miscelleneous tunes, ranging from fast tracks to slow ballads. 1st track is the multi-award winning <> . Although Hacken Lee was the first to bring this song to the listeners, listening to Gigi's version adds a new flavour to it. Supposing that this song is the most sucessful piece of composition that she had ever achieved till now. Track 11 is the winter mix of track 1. It sounded serene and almost similar to a Christmas Carol. Track 2 and 10 are both fast and upbeat. The former gets a taste of Leon Lai's song but do has its own speciality though where as the latter has a catchy and jaunty tempo which is really magnificent and thrills me lot!! Both of the tracks are equally good and makes you want to tap your feet and dancing away. Track 3 sounded commercial, like any other heart-rending tunes, but with Gigi's unique vocal, it's no longer the run-of-the-mill type, instead bringing out a moving sentimental love song. 4th track is another Gigi's masterpiece. Sounding rather ordinary but what I like is its simplicity, a simple acoustic guitar as base with Gigi's angelic voice rendering along. It probably will require a few listening before getting to it. If that is still not enough, let's move on to track 5. A typical jazz lover would likely to be captivated by this song. A slight dose of jazz is enough to make you waft in the air. Track 6 lures you to drink a cup of coffee. Track 7 and 8 are melodious and of easy-listening. Track 9 is a Cantonese cover of her previous Mandarin effort, also of her own composition. It has a pleasant gradation of sounds with a mix of R & B and ballad. Very comfortable indeed to listen to. Forking out RM 40-odd for 11 beautiful songs is actually worthwhile, not to mention the wonderful packaging. Gigi has a change in the rendition of these songs. How to say it? It has become more forceful instead of her usual sweet crooning. Try buying this album and relish it!!!!

Great Improvement !! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Although she is still far from those singing GREATS like Faye, Anita or Sandy, at the rate she is improvement, I think her popularity should overtake Sammi & Kelly in another 2 or 3 years.

Is it really a funny face album? Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
I have brought 'funny face' album three days ago and i found that only track 2 which is funny face was the only quality song. Sometimes I wonder why gigi never defeat sammi in terms of album sales. Now i think i get the answer. Gigi never sing a dance songs. Gigi only will sing slow song (ballad) or fast song (without dance). Take a look to Kelly and Sammi. They always sing dance song not fast song. If Gigi really not talented in singing dance song, i recommend she involve herself in rap. Recently the music industry offer a great opportunity for female singer to sing rap. That's why Sammi (Wonder Woman) and Kelly (Baby Cat) latest album also put rap as a part of their album. Therefore, Gigi should take this opportunity to powerlise the music industry.
