On a secluded island in Northern Okinawa, the skull of a kamikaze pilot sits on an open burial ground. The whistling sound of the wind blowing through it scares the residents enough that they dub it "The Crying Head". This eerie remnant from World War II serves as the basis for director Higashi Yoichi's Fuon (a.k.a. The Crying Wind), based on two short stories by award-winning Okinawan writer Medorume Shun.

Winner of the Innovation Award at the 2004 Montreal World Film Festival, Fuon explores two wounded souls haunted by their respective pasts: a grandfather who still regrets stealing a fountain pen from a dead kamikaze pilot, and a mother who comes to the island to get away from her abusive husband. Depicting the lives of several characters still living the pain of World War II today, the film examines the effects that remain from the Japanese imperial army and the American army's occupations of Okinawa.

芥川賞作家・目取真俊（めどるましゅん）が初めて書き下ろした脚本を、ベルリン国際映画祭で絶賛を浴びて「銀熊賞」を受賞した『絵の中のぼくの村』の東陽一監督が映画化。
