1943年7月5日・・・イタリア。B-17が爆撃の為に編隊を組んで目的地に向かっていた。目的地直前、激しい対空砲火に加え独軍のメッサーシュミットが編隊に向かって突っ込んでくる。既に爆撃コースに乗っているB-17の大群は進行方向を変える事も出来ず一直線に目的地の上空を目指す事しか出来ない。この時点で隊員達の命は運に任せる以外何も出来ない・・・。被弾したエンジンが止まり編隊から遅れる事は死を意味する。爆撃機に乗る隊員は人数が減った分だけ補充して再び出撃を繰り返す。自分にまだ運が残っている事を信じて・・・。仲間の死を悼み酒を浴び、また対空砲火の中、爆弾を抱え爆撃に向かう。ミッチェル中尉率いる機体も何度も死線をくぐりながら飛んでいた。何度目かの出撃命令で爆撃に向かった帰り、激しい対空砲火を受け機体はエンジンをやられ辛うじて飛んでいる状態だったが、高度が上がらず地上からの集中砲火を受ける。既に墜落していても不思議ではないダメージを受けながら飛び続ける・・・。
