G-Dragon Vol. 2 - COUP D'ETAT (LP) (Limited Edition)

YesAsia Editorial Description

This is G-Dragon's COUP D'ETAT! In typical YG fashion, the Big Bang leader's second solo album features a whopping four title songs: Black featuring Jennie Kim, "Who You?", "Crooked" and Niliria, which is released in both a solo version and a collaboration version with Missy Elliot. The exciting collaboration was unveiled at a special performance on M Countdown: What's Up LA in August. Other hot new tracks on the album include the titular opening number featuring Diplo and Baauer and "I Love It," a collaboration with Zion. T and Boys Noize.

Limited to 8,888 copies, this edition comes with the album on Vinyl LP as well as two mini photobooks, a mask and a pin button.

G-DRAGON COUP D’ETAT VINYL LP
[LIMITED EDITION]

Damaged... Customer Review Rated Bad 6 - 6 out of 10
The album and calendar are awesome, however the album was slightly damaged which was a shame. There have been multiple times where the albums from YesAsia have been delivered damaged.

Infinity 8 and the heART of the Dragon Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
‘THE REVOLUTION IS IN YOUR MIND’ in big black bold letters on the back of this CD reminds me of punk band CRASS and the stencil shouts on their LP/single art sleeves. G Dragon’s black and red ‘Coup D'etat’ and the ‘mental rebellions’ within are similar shouts, strong parallels but from different landscapes – albeit to some in a world populous still variedly and systematically exploited. GD’s respectful pop eclectic and love of things rebel art (concurrent in GD’s ‘Crooked’ music video), surely muses, even parodying grandiose poise of power anger, ersatz anarchy and theatrical swagger, that a naturally sober and gradual realization of ‘inner revolution’ is to creatively awaken our individual imprisoned spirits and decayed freedoms to a much happier understanding of the 2D human ego and repaired love for one another. That’s what I try to assume anyway as the point of art pop rebellion – it doesn’t have to be unrefined hate, love and ego…but a fusion of them ALL to something good and understood and positively applauded across the cosmos. Or Not! GD tries to do that, and with a parody of swagger, image and FUN at the helm. Scrap the dust collecting trophies of transitory rewarded egotism and enlighten the soul with none judgmental GD child soul rebellion…a bit like shouting the self back into a people like Na’vi on the world of Avatar, but with a penchant for GTA (remember…that word FUN).

Funnily enough, considering the ‘Coup D'etat’ songs ‘Black’ and ‘Who You?’ the same day GD’s album dropped through my letterbox I also received Gary Numan’s really good new album ‘Splinter’ (GN I’ve loved for years), with similar title tracks (I reflect such happenings from Miss Coincidence). Certainly Pop artisans YEARN for utter releasing freedom - commerce and true artists sometimes having a difficult mix, and GD seems here to shout such things (especially track opener ‘Coup D’etat’). LOVE and peace love, as masked rebellion? But YG are GD’s pedestal. Time also is a fitter survivor than its humble traveler subjects, but GD cruises pop culture with gusto, implementing colorful adopted expression/style of much past/present pop icons from various music genres. And GD mixes well his version (vision?) of utilized passion, pop pneumatic and quirky cabaret style. GD’s theatrical princely bad boy charm is popular, the masked intruder not quite obvious (we have to look at the irony). Who he GD? Camouflage reflecting another’s thinking Elitism? Oh, the mystery.

The Dragon’s heart is full of Stars! Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
Anyway, GD certainly as nifty skills in rap lyric, fusion music and fashion photogenic. But for ‘Coup D'e Tat’ on a first listen I wasn’t sentient of any brilliance to pique my interest. Not won over by all songs. This is lyrically good, musically sound and varied and an album technically polished and refined; Teddy also delivers good to decent dance electro songs (and that’s what he does - I couldn’t mix up a soufflé for toffee). But on continual returns to GD’s CD I more appreciated the ambiguous rebel rousing and ‘who you Dr Enemy’ protagonist frustration (there just shouldn’t be wars now like the present Syrian atrocities, and awful TV propaganda), but this conflicted to what I hoped GD’s freedom of wanting to write more eclectically themed songs and his views about modern society could be. The swagger shines brightly, but maybe a bit too much GTA.

Although I shouldn’t give a asterisks and exclamation marks to what music I listen to, I do like saccharine flavored melodies and preferred the ear candy stuff on ‘Coup D'e Tat’ than the ‘offbeat’ here (although love Akira Yamaoka’s SH soundtracks and ambient EM genre music) and liked the dubstep R.O.D. (should be a single with additional mixes - its POP music for *!**! sake); the 80s’s metal rocka ‘Runaway’ (blimey Keun Suk Jang could roll to this) and ‘Crooked’ and additional more lyrical swaggers of ‘You Do’, ‘Go’, ‘Black’, ‘Window’ and ‘Who You?’. But songs could have been more – more love, peace and ice-cream maybe? R.O.D. (I automatically think of Japanese ‘Read or Die’ anime) hit me the most, for Lydia Park’s additional 2NE1 type vocal – but I like it. Melodic songs, ‘experiment’ and lyrical substance support the GD image well - stamped with the broken footed revolutionary tag. What GD (or alter ego of Ji-yong Kwon..lol) does he does well, and shows as a pop star the frustrated ‘anger’ of being such a STAR (as well as having FUN) and does mean well in places. But for GD, the more serious ART gets, the more critical criticism flows. It’s been the same for many a group and solo artist through pop, rap and rock history – a planet like thick crust of a skin is needful to trek the great POPulace. But we like what we can like, what is proffered as product and in the 20th and 21st centuries modern music, as with good video games, movies and sci-fi books – it’s a good, weird and lovely egotistical time to be ALIVE. Coup D'e Tat is no masterpiece, but will be loved just like anything else.
