A heartwarming tale of a boy and his grandmother Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"Gabai Granny" is a sentimental treat, a movie certain to appeal to fans of the two "Always - Sunset on Third Street" films. Young Akihiro, whose father died of radiation poisoning before Akihiro was born, is getting to an age at which his working mother (Kudoh Youki) is worried that he might get into trouble in the wide-open port city of Hiroshima. Consequently, without his knowledge, she packs him off to spend several years in the small Kyushu town of Saga with his grandmother (Yoshiyuki Kazuko), a quirky old woman he's never met.

Old Oba-chan earns money by dragging a magnet behind her as she walks the streets of Saga; she sells the scrap metal that sticks to the magnet. She gathers much of her food from the river that flows by her home; she lives downstream from a farmer's market where the vendors toss oddly-shaped or spoiled food into the river. Can the crestfallen Akihiro, teased by his new schoolmates and missing his mother, possibly adjust to life with his crusty and peculiar grandmother?

"Gabai Granny" is suffused with a gentle humor that tempers the pathos of Akihiro's plight. The acting by the entire cast is excellent, with a superb performance by Yoshiyuki Kazuko as Akihiro's oba-chan and a nice cameo as a compassionate tofu seller by the great Ogata Ken. The film's bittersweet ending is perfect. I recommend "Gabai Granny" wholeheartedly for the entire family. We need more movies like this!
