Popular actress Miyazaki Aoi (
Eureka) delivers a powerful award-winning performance in the harrowing 2001 youth film
Gaichu (a.k.a.
Harmful Insect). Directed by Shiota Akihiko (
Dororo), the film follows the disquieting life of an alienated teenage girl as she futilely battles for and against her own existence in a world that thrusts her prematurely into adulthood. Uncompromisingly realistic in its storyline and characterization,
Gaichu, which screened at the Venice Film Festival, looks squarely at the social and emotional perils faced by today's youth. The early pairing of two of Japan's best young actresses, Miyazaki Aoi and Aoi Yu (
Hula Girls) - who were only 16 at the time - makes
Gaichu of especial interest to Japanese film fans, and both leave deep impressions with their performances.
Junior high school student Sachiko (Miyazaki Aoi) should be enjoying the best years of her life, but instead what surrounds her is a dangerous world full of internal and external predators. Though Sachiko continues to wear her schoolgirl uniform she stops attending classes, unable to connect with her classmates and the school environment despite the valiant efforts of her kind-hearted best friend Natsuko (Aoi Yu). Life at home is equally unstable between her depressive suicidal mother (Ryo, Casshern) and her sketchy boyfriend. Instead, Sachiko wanders the streets pondering death and seeks comfort through letters with her former math teacher who had to move elsewhere because of rumors about his relationship with Sachiko. Though light occasionally breaks through the darkness thanks to the friendship of Natsuko and a young gangster she meets, the world keeps closing in on Sachiko, pushing her over the edge.
