Osawa Takao (Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World) stars in this touching film based on a bestseller novel by popular singer-songwriter Sada Masashi. The Japanese title Gege literally means "End of Summer", but the expression also refers to the completion of a period in which a monk adheres to strict ascetic rules to overcome fears. Osawa portrays elementary teacher Takayuki who is gradually losing his eyesight. He tries to hide the truth from his girlfriend Yoko (Ishida Yuriko) who has flown to Mongolia. However, she somehow finds out about his distressing fate and returns to comfort him.

東京で小学校の教師をしていた隆之は、体の異常を幼なじみの医者・博信に訴える。診断結果はベーチェット病。その中でも視力を徐々に失っていくケースだった。隆之は大学の恩師朝村に自らの病気を告白し、恋人である朝村の娘、陽子とは別れると告げる。その時、教育心理学を学ぶ陽子は研究のためにモンゴルにいた。隆之は職を辞し母と姉の住む故郷長崎に帰った。幼なじみの松尾に支えられ懐かしい町を目に焼き付けようと日々歩く隆之の元に、陽子がやってくる。愛してるから別れようとする隆之と、愛しているから側に居たいという陽子。そんなある日、隆之は陽子と訪れた寺、聖福寺で林という老人に出会う。林の暖かい人柄に触れ、自らの病気を告白した隆之に林は“解夏”について語る。失明するという恐怖は“行”。そして辛い辛い行を経て、失明した瞬間に解放される、その日が隆之にとっての“解夏”なのだと…。
