YesAsia Editorial Description

From Tetsuo: The Iron Man to Tokyo Fist, Japanese cult director Tsukamoto Shinya has built his career on subverting and shocking through grotesque subject matters, graphic images, and over-the-top violence. His films take viewers on lush, surreal journeys to the root of human nature, however ugly and disturbing that may be. Based on an Edogawa Rampo story, his 1999 film Gemini, a.k.a. Soseji, considered by some to be the director's best work, departs from the modern industrial landscape of his previous films for a late Meiji period setting. The film stars Motoko Masahiro (The Bird People in China) in dual roles, caught in a fatalistic battle with inner and outer demons.

Country doctor Yukio (Motoki Masahiro) couldn't ask for much more from life. Well respected in the community, he has a flourishing practice and a beautiful wife (Ryo), albeit one who can't remember her past. Yukio prefers to associate with the upper class, and his disdain for the less fortunate causes him to turn away from those in need. But soon his storybook life begins to fall apart, with the murder of his parents and the appearance of a dangerous man who looks exactly like him and is intent on taking over his life.

Professional Review of "Gemini (DVD) (Special Edition) (Limited Edition) (English Subtitled) (Japan Version)"

    July 31, 2007

This professional review refers to Gemini (Japan Version)
Despite my enduring love for the work of Shinya Tsukamoto - in my view one of the most consistently challenging and rewarding film makers in the world - there haved been, until recently a pair of his films which I had never seen in their entirety. One is Tetsuo II, the other Gemini. The Tetsuo title remains on the 'to watch' list but thanks to a recent ultra low cost Japanese reissue of Gemini on DVD, I have finally been able to cross that one off of the list.

Adapted from a short story by Edogawa Rampo, Gemini is one of only two work-for-hire projects Tsukamoto has accepted over the course of his career. Radically different from his early output, Gemini came as a surprise to many fans at the time but in retrospect, with his more recent output in mind, the film makes far more sense. Rampo and Tsukamoto seem a natural, even an obvious fit now, both of them embracing a certain formal elegance and belief in the beauty of the grotesque.

A tale of sibling rivalry gone horribly wrong, Gemini stars Masahiro Motoki as Yukio Daitokuji, a doctor who built a glowing reputation for treating wounded soldiers during the war despite his own unspoken feelings that much of his work in that time was simply wasted effort. Daitokuji lives in his magnificent family estate with his parents and young, amnesiac bride Rin - discovered on the banks of a nearby river - blissfully untouched by the poverty rampant in the surrounding, post-war countryside.

Everything in Daitokuji's life appears perfect on the surface, an impression he has worked hard to maintain. But a plague has broken out in the region, he is swamped with patients, and resentment is building among the local populace due to the priority he gives to treating the wealthy and his disdain for the poor. There is tension between his parents and Rin, whom they regard as little more than a homeless wastrel, and a shadowy figure has been spotted lurking in the garden, a figure dear old mom seems to know more about than she's saying.

By the time Daitokuji learns the truth about the figure, it is far too late. The figure is his identical twin brother, abandoned in the local slums at birth due to a disfiguring birthmark, returned to take his revenge. Father is killed, Daitokuji thrown down a dired out well, and the brother takes his place.

In many ways Gemini marks a significant turning point for Tsukamoto. Until this point of his career all of his films - Hiruko the Goblin excepted - were driven at least to some degree by the propulsive aesthetics of Tetsuo and his experimental theater work. Gemini is where Tsukamoto first dove headlong into character work, and that experience clearly marked his subsequent output. While the film still clearly showcases the auteur's fixation with body horror - the casual insertion of war amputees in the waiting room stands out strongly - it also shows him experimenting to greater degrees than ever before with light, texture and subtle effects to create mood, the general absence of eyebrows throughout proving surprisingly unsettling.

An Elegant, yet Jarring Film Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Gemini is definitely not your average, cut-and-dried Japanese horror film. Actually, in this case, the term “horror film” seems nothing more than a misnomer. This is an elegant, haunting film, set in the Meiji period of Japan (following the Russo-Japanese War), with an ominous and unique cyber punk aesthetic. It reveals a complex plotline, which expands upon the original tale (written by Edogawa Rampo), through character development and in an engaging and thought-provoking way. But nothing in this movie is simply fed to its audience; it is the audience’s duty to observe and absorb this film experience and to interpret the film’s meaning in their own way.

Shinya Tsukamoto and Masahiro Motoki are extremely talented and really make this movie what it is. I highly recommend this film above all other film adaptations of Rampo’s work.

Hated It Customer Review Rated Bad 1 - 1 out of 10
After reading the review on this site for this movie I was so excited about ordering it. When it finally arrived and I sat down to watch it, I was extrememly disappointed. The movie is short and the story is very rushed. Many elements of the story line are only briefly explained and some are not explained at all. The characters are underdeveloped and there is very little action. At the moment I thought the picture would get interesting it was over. This is not a film I would recommend and I'm glad I bought it on VCD first and not on DVD.

One Of The Best Movie Ever!!!! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
Get the movie now!!! This movie is definitely one of the best movie of all time!!! This movie combines mystery, asian horror, and love story all into one movie. These elements bond so well that you cant tell what kinda movie it really is, there is absolutely no gap or any diversity between the elements. What I really like about this movie is that it keeps you in suspense and creates a mood that force you to feel like you are in that movie. The most brilliance part of the movie is near the end, when the writer of the movie use the identity of the twin to play tricks with your mind. The climax explains pretty much the whole movie but yet also make you confuse abut what just happened. I tried to organize the plot but just got more confuse at the end. Trust me!!! Dont try it out!!! At the end you just cant tell Who is Who, What is What, Where is Where, When is When, and Why is Why.....
