Striking take on Genji's tale Customer Review Rated Bad 9 - 9 out of 10
"Genji - A Thousand Year Love" is a film that viewers likely will either love or hate. I loved it! Here are a few of the reasons I was so captivated by it:

First, the casting of Amami Yuki as Genji was brilliant. If Genji had been played by a male actor, he would have seemed like nothing more than a pampered sexual predator. By placing Amami Yuki in this role, Genji becomes a more sympathetic character.

Second, the story-telling approach was a stroke of genius. We see not only the "Tale of Genji" as it unfolds, but we learn about the life of the story's author, Lady Murasaki. Moreover, by having Murasaki tell Genji's story to a girl who has been selected to become a mistress to the emperor, the film allows a running commentary on the story that helps the viewer understand this ancient tale.

Third, the film looks stunningly gorgeous. The set decoration, costuming, and cinematography are breathtakingly beautiful.

Fourth, the performances by Amami Yuki as Genji, veteran actress Yoshinaga Sayuri as Lady Murasaki, and Tokiwa Takako as Murasaki no Ue are very moving.

Many viewers have found the film's musical interludes to be distracting; they provide a periodic poetic commentary on the film's story. For the most part, I found them enjoyable, although the song at the film's 40 minute mark is too jarringly pop. (Is that Kudo Shizuka doing the singing?)

I found "Genji - A Thousand Year Love" to be thoroughly engaging from start to finish. I recommend it very highly.

Dissapointing. Customer Review Rated Bad 3 - 3 out of 10
It is good that a film has been made about such an important book that was written about a thousand years ago, but the film could have been done much better. Genji, the beautiful and talented hero of the tale, is played by a woman. It was weird trying to watch this woman try to play a man who was quite the lady's man. Another annoying thing about the movie is the strange woman that pops up at times to sing a song now and then. I did like the costumes and how they showed a little about the life of the book's author, Murasaki Shirkibu, but I would not recommend this movie to anyone that wasn't already a big fan of the book.
