The series is divided into "Stand Alone" and "Complex" episodes, with "Stand Alone" episodes following individual cases and "Complex" episodes centering around a long-running investigation of the notorious and elusive hacker Laughing Man.

Ghost in the Shell: The Laughing Man re-edits the Laughing Man storyline from the series into a feature-length release. Without the side cases and distracting red herrings, the Laughing Man investigation becomes the main story, putting the details and subtle clues into clearer focus.
