For anyone who's ever suspected that Gackt might be a cyborg - because he's, cough, too awesome to be all human - the suddenly (and thankfully) prolific again rocker answers with his new single GHOST. His second tie-in song for the American sci-fi series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, GHOST is a fabulous follow-up to his December 2008 single Jesus (for anyone who's ever suspected that Gackt might be...). The ghost in question here is not the haunting kind, but rather the ghost in the machine which Gackt gives voice to in this electronic hard rock number. Opening with the sound of creaking machines and techno beats, GHOST jumps into a simple rock melody replete with electronic sounds, guitar, and digital noise, plus Gackt's deep, resonant vocals distorted for robotic effect. The vocal distortion gradually clears away as the song progresses and breaks from its heavily layered shell. The song's dark and powerful lyrics are similar in sentiment to those of Jesus, screaming agonized thoughts and pleads for salvation. A very successful fusion of rock, electronic, and all manners of sound effects, GHOST gets all the better if you think of it as a Gackt robot dance track (refer to music video). GHOST's machine crank-down, digital-noise fadeout leads into the unique B-side Blue Lagoon which channels the mystery and sonorous sounds of the deep sea. The dramatically low-pitched and deliberately paced opening verse dives into an increasingly electronic arrangement with a lyrical repeating riff fitting for a grand RPG score, and very fitting for the Gackt canon. |

Ghost is a little different to what Gackt uselly dones but still a great track if you are into the electronic rock genre. His voice is deep and haunting filling the song with deep emotion, that even the non japanese speaking fans can understand. Blue Lagoon is a beautiful song! So passionate and... its just so hard to describe! But it is an amazing song! |

Not My Favourite
|
Normally, one of the things I adore about Gackt music is the rich complex sound that he always has and the rarity of his English cropping up--a personal pet-peeve of mine in the Japanese music industry. The fact that only one guitarist was used and that the entirety of the song was digitally mixed was a bit of a let-down for me, as the man is my musical arranging hero. However, he outdid himself vocally, he was all over the place register-wise and the layering and effects were very lovely and haunting. However, I would call Ghost one of his more forgettable songs when compared to pieces like "Last Song" and "Returner" Moving onto Blue Lagoon, in summary: I loved it. Even though the instrumentals were done with the same technique as the titular single, it was so much more three-dimensional and complex. The lyrics were nothing short of haunting. I recommend getting the single, if only for the sake of the B-Side. |
