YesAsia Editorial Description

Hong Kong singer-actress Gigi Leung has shifted her focus to developing her career in the China and Taiwan markets in the last couple of years. In 2009, her romantic comedy Give Love (directed by Joe Ma, co-starring Wilson Chen) premiered on Valentine's Day, and two months later, she continues the "giving" theme with her latest Mandarin album Gift. The new album marks Gigi's first attempt at music production, and the titular track Gift is yet another showcase of her songwriting abilities, as she composed both the music and the lyrics. The CD contains 14 tracks, including nine new Mandarin songs and two in Cantonese. The Bonus DVD has three music videos, plus offering a glimpse of Gigi in New York City.

Gigi's Gift Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
As I have never had a liking for Cantopop, I never really paid attention to Gigi thinking she was just another one of those HK artists who tried to break into the Mandopop industry. Oh, how I was wrong. Gigi has an extensive Mandarin discography extending from 1996. Since digging deeper into her music, I developed a liking for her music, especially her calm ballads that highlight her striking vocals. Gift, although not my favourite of Gigi's albums, is another solid release that emphasizes the talents that she holds.

I will say the first song that struck out to me was track #3, "Missed". This ballad was just so different from the others on the album because it had a slightly sadder feel to it. It helped that Gigi sounded amazing in it. I would say other great songs would be "Gift", "Give Love" and "A Good Walk", all of which are ballads that feature a calmer and less dynamic arrangement, but do their job by showcasing the vocals. I especially enjoy the latter song as it also focuses on the acoustic guitar, which helps the song's melody flow. Although the ballads stuck out, there are a few enjoyable upbeat tracks like "I Am Gigi Leung" and "abcdefGG". The latter is probably the most awkward sounding song on the album because of it's dance beats and synthed over vocals. It's definitely interesting nonetheless.

The only thing I would say this album is lacking is that one amazing ballad Gigi would always put release that you couldn't stop listening to because the melody would just be stuck there (examples would be "Short Hair" or "Magical Season"). Nevertheless, Gigi still managed to release a solid album that focused on her strong point, ballads. Her voice still sounds refreshing and although there isn't that one ballad that I couldn't stop listening to, there are several that I would take out once in a while. Overall, this album might take a while to get into to (as it did for me), but it's worth it in the end.

Another winner from Gigi Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
It took me a while to warm up to Gigi's new album, "Gift", perhaps because many of the songs employ a subtle melodicism that creeps up on the listener. But I've found that this album just keeps getting better and better the more I listen to it. "Gift" features eleven songs and three music box-style ditties. The songs are the usual assortment of sweet ballads, love songs, and sprightly uptempo numbers we expect from Gigi. The production values on this album are far superior to those found on her last album, "Love Song for Myself"; the album sounds great! Track 7 is marred by a bad but blessedly brief rap and track 11 is forgettable, but everything else is up to Gigi's high standards. The low-resolution DVD features nice videos of the album's three best ballads as well as a video of her in various New York City settings. (Surprisingly for me, the video opens just outside an apartment building in which I considered living and closes at a location only a block away from the apartment I actually rented.) I've been listening to Gigi's album's for over a decade and "Gift" is among her best. I recommend it highly.

~The Gift~ Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A year after the release of her previous mandarin album, "love song for myself", this much anticipated album, "the gift" has finally surfaced. As usual, she never failed to engage in good music, putting her best foot in to give the best for her ardent fans.

The album starts off with the sweet-sounding and heart-warming title track, her own composition, which of course, truly reflects her forte in serenading heart-rending ballads. Tailing back is Track 3, a melancholic song that simply melts my heart away as she croons her way forlornly, making lamentations about love. Track 4 and 11 is quite jaunty and pacy, but I have a preference over the latter. The only thing commendable to put on for Track 4 is the string of song titles from her previous efforts to be placed inside the lyrics, which is surprising and make it rather extraordinary. Track 11 captivates me with its refreshing uplifting tune that makes you want to sing along, clap your hands and tap your feet to the sound of it.

After a stress-out evening, Track 5 may just be the perfect relaxing piece as it takes you along to a place of beauty and tranquility. Track 7 - "abcdefGG", the title was pretty attractive with its bouncy and rhythmic tune that really gives me feel good vibes. Same goes to Track 9, her rendition on this song is once again a manifestation of a versatile singer that can venture into any genre of music. The exuberant and lively beat just keeps buzzing in my head on and on. Track 8 which happens to be the soundtrack for the movie "give love", provides another inspiring yet charming tune that tells about dedicating and cherishing one's love whole-heartedly, and is simply pleasant to the ears with her mellifluous vocal. Ensuing Track 9 is Track 10, which is a first collaboration between Gigi and the talented Malaysian lad, Rynn Lim. The result - a beautiful sentimental piece that blends perfectly with the lyrics declaring the hopeless infatuation for love.

Finally, do listen out for the beautiful musical tunes as they simply matches with the concept of this album. The most notable thing about this album is her involvement in the whole production, from music down to art direction and definitely kudos must be given for all the efforts. Without doubt, this is a must-have and will probably be the BEST GIFT ever to own!!
