高凌風（秦祥林飾），一位充滿了蓬勃朝氣而又自視很高的大學森林系學生，在芸芸眾女生中，終於發現了有著一對亮晶晶黑眼珠，美麗而又有靈氣的女孩夏小蟬（林青霞飾）。
一身傲骨的高凌風，當他發覺自己開始向戀愛挑戰時，就像其他所有既將墜入愛河的大學生一樣，在興奮中，又帶著緊張。愛情攻勢一發動，高凌風才警覺到另有一位品學兼優，風度翩翩的電機系高材生何懷祖（石峰）也在追求夏小蟬，為了這位有靈氣的「女朋友」和強敵，高凌風陷入了痛苦與自怨自艾中。
此後，高凌風和何懷祖曾經展開一連串的「競爭」，儘管好友克偉（江彬）給他出了許多鬼主意，可敗在何懷祖的手下，心高氣傲的凌風，並不因此氣餒，終於在一次熱門音樂演唱會中，他展露了自己在歌唱方面的才華，並且打動了夏小蟬的芳心。如果不是夏小蟬的父母阻撓，也許，這位美麗的女朋友會跟他長相廝守，可是，上一代的看法，儘管下一代無法苟同，然而上一代堅持的事情，卻不是下一代都能反對得了的。於是誤會、衝突而形成了「代溝」，不過，上一代的看法是不是錯，而下一代的想法是不是對，有時真是不一定的。
夏小蟬聽從了父母的主張，隨懷祖赴美。受到愛情打擊和畢業後失業痛苦的凌風，恨透了小蟬，也恨透了這冷酷的社會，但是，他仍執拗的不肯放棄在夜總會唱自己所愛唱的歌，不取分文酬勞的，一遍又一遍地唱，可是，還是惹惱了經理，惹煩了客人，也惹怒了他自己。在這段演唱生涯中，始終有一位「女聽眾」雅萍（蕭芳芳）忠實的聽他演唱，並且全心全意的幫助他，那位女聽眾發現自己是愛上了這個桀驁不馴的年輕人。然而，在凌風的愛情領域中，卻容納不下另一位女朋友，他雖然恨透夏小蟬，但還是愛極了小蟬，直到小蟬...
