堪稱威爾第代表作的《命運之力》首演於一八六二年的聖彼得堡皇家劇院。此齣在蘇聯觀眾面前首映的鉅作，不同於後來以宗教慰藉、進而讓人忘記仇恨的修訂版本，結局居然是以三名主角同時死去做為結尾。不強求迎合天主教寬恕的原則，威爾第的歌劇強調冥冥中自有註定，無法更改的結局才是《命運之力》的精神。
Valery Gergiev conducts this musically exhilarating production, which boasts superlative performances by Galina Gorchakova (Leonora), Gegam Grigorian (Alvaro) and Nikolai Putilin (Carlo). Verdu wrote his epic Forza on commission from the Imperial Theatre of St Petersburg and it was prmiered there in 1862. Written for a Russian audience, it ended in despair with the death of all three principal characters, rather than offering the religious consolation of the more familiar revised version. Freed from the need to satisfy a Catholic sense of forgiveness, Verdi showed that destiny catches up with the wrongdoer in the end.
