Re-inventing the beauty of the classic costume movies, Ridley Scott is ably assisted by a convincing cast led by Russel Crowe in this touching tale about a man's battle for final justice.
Shot in the beginning of the new century, Gladiator is one of those movies that puts you right into the middle of the happenings. Crowe no doubt imbues the protagonist with a charisma that has become rare in Hollywood productions, especially those from the more recent past. Perhaps one of the finest scenes from the movie is the one in which the protagonist has to face his archenemy, the new emperor of Rome, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), for the second time. Crowe's portrayal of Maximus says it all: he makes the usual salutation by word of mouth ("Highness"), but with an intonation that clearly reveals his disdain. Phoenix is equally laudable in his role as the confused and evil dictator. It is in his eyes, his gestures, and the way he stresses his utterances ("You simply won't die") that makes the viewers hate him, or in other words, they are deceived by his convincing portrayal. Among the other praiseworthy performances are Connie Nielsen who instills Princess Lucilla with just the right touch of nobility, Oliver Reed's striking farewell role as Proximus, and Djimon Hounsou as good-natured slave Juba. Special praise must also go to the spellbinding score by Hans Zimmer, whose sounds are sure to linger in ears long after the film is over. Skillfully combining all the individual parts into a winning whole, Scott has crafted a movie that, though rich in graphic violence, ought to be remembered for its exceptional performances. |
