Traversing the realms of the living and the dead, 2010 Taiwan drama Gloomy Salad Days is a dark tale of the Death God (in the shape of a beautiful 19-year-old girl) and the unfortunate souls she encounters. But infernal fantasy is not what this highly rated macabre drama is all about. Taking inspirations from news headlines concerning high school students, female filmmaker Zero Chou (Drifting Flowers, Spider Lilies) boldly tackles shocking social issues with imaginative storytelling and stylish visuals wrapped in an attractive gothic package. She brings together a cast comprised mainly of pop idols and young actors, putting Fahrenheit's Aaron Yan and actress Serena Fang (Summer's Desire) as the central characters of the ten unit stories of two episodes each. The vast supporting cast includes members from pop groups Lollipop (Prince and Owodog), Choc7 (Modi and Ben), AK (Andy Chen and Kris Shen), Hey Girl (Xiao Man), Wu Hu Jiang (Wes), and Awaking (Jay Shih), plus popular actors James Wen and Jack Kao.

Often described as Taiwan's Death Note or Hell Girl, the controversial series produced by PTS centers on Du (Serena Fang), the gatekeeper of the netherworld who is neither dead nor alive, and neither good nor evil. The souls who are unable to get over their setbacks in life can summon the Death Girl and have their wishes granted, but in return they will turn into stones in Hell and forever lose their chance of salvation. Meanwhile, a lonely teenager named Shen Qi (Aaron Yan) is gifted with the uncanny ability to see the Death Girl. In time, he realizes her true purpose and begins to fall for her. But the doctor tells him, those are only his hallucinations on account of the tumor in his brain. The tumor threatens to kill Shen Qi, but if he has it surgically removed, he'd never be able to see his Du again...
