남북전쟁이 한창 진행중인 미국. 로버트 굴드쇼는 젊은 나이에 최초로 흑인들로만 이뤄진 54연대의 지휘관이 된다. 행진할 때 앞 뒤좌우도 구분 못하며, 군기라고는 눈을 씻고도 찾아볼 수 없는 이들이 전투는 제대로 할 수 있을지 걱정이다. 한편, 남부연합 포고령에는 군복을 입은 흑인포로는 물론 그 지휘관도 사형에 처한다는 사실을 접하게 된다. 하지만 두려워 도망치는 흑인병사는 한 명도 없었다. 열심히 훈련하여 군대의 위용이 갖춰졌지만 흑인이라는 이유만으로 국회의 승인을 얻지 못해 군용품 지급도 받지 못하고 출전명령도 떨어지지 않고 있다. 하지만 로버트 대령의 노력으로 자신들의 자유를 위해 싸울 기회를 만든다. 첫번째 전투에서 큰 성과를 거두고 마침내 난공불락의 포트 와그너 공략전을 맞이하여 스스로 선봉에 서게 된 54연대. 이길 확률은 커녕 생존 확률도 희박한 전투에 54연대는 힘차게 행진을 시작한다.
