YesAsia Editorial Description

Wong Jing directs Chow Yun Fat in the first of the wildly popular God of Gamblers series! Chow Yun Fat is Ko Chun, the legendary God of Gamblers, whose skills at the gambling table know no equal. But Ko Chun receives a fall from grace when a trusted confidante (Lung Fong) betrays him and attempts to have him killed. The attempt fails, but Ko Chun is left in a childlike mental and emotional state, where he can only be pacified by chocolate! Taking care of him are two-bit hood Dagger (Andy Lau) and his girl (Joey Wang), who don't realize at first that their immature guest is really the God of Gamblers. But when Ko Chun's innate gambling ability is revealed, Dagger realizes the truth: he has the God of Gamblers in his care! But can Dagger protect Ko Chun long enough for him to regain his skills, and take back his name and reputation?

Gambling films were already an established genre in Hong Kong Cinema, but the team of Chow Yun Fat and Wong Jing reinvigorated the genre with the first God of Gamblers movie! A sublime combination of wacky comedy, over-the-top action, and ultra-cool gambling sequences, God of Gamblers still has the power to thrill and entertain. Followed by many sequels and spin-offs, including Chow Yun Fat's return to the character in the blockbuster 1994 hit, God of Gamblers' Return.

This Movie does for Gambling.. Customer Review Rated Bad 8 - 8 out of 10
What 'A Better Tomorrow' did for Heroic Bloodshed!
This film is an excellent mix of Comedy and Action, with a little emotional drama thrown in just for good measure, This Movie Features Chow Yun-Fat as Ko Chun, a Master Gambler who is hired by a Japanese Nightclub Magnate named Wang to play a game against the so called "Devil of Gamblers' Chan Sing, in order to avenge Wang's father, who lost a game to Chan and died of shame. The Catch? Chan is known for Cheating and not playing by the rules, so Wang provides Ko Chun with a Bodyguard named Dragon, who plays a major part in the movie's various action scenes.

Unfortunately, our hero Ko Chun accidentally falls into a trap set by local Ruffian Knife Chen (Andy Lau) while walking home from a Gambling match, and subsequently loses his memory, yet leaving his supernatural gambling skill intact. He is soon taken in by Knife and His Girlfriend (Joey Wong) and while trying regaining his memory, helps them out with his Amazing gambling skill, while dodging various adversaries and obstacles along the way...

All in all, God of Gamblers is quite a classy film, and while there are some great jokes and comedic characters (as we can expect from Wong Jing) some of the action in the film seems a little out of place. Chow Shines as usual in his role as Ko Chun, making the character just as memorable as the likes of Mark Gor, and Andy and Joey heads a decent supporting cast which includes Such regulars as Shing Fui On and Comedic Favourite Ng Man Tat, as well as a nice cameo by Michiko Nishiwaki (Of My Lucky Stars Fame).

God of Gamblers was a landmark film which spawned a whole new genre of gambling films, yet has seldom been bettered. Highly recommended for Not just Chow Yun Fat fans, but anyone who thinks Chow and Andy can't do anything but drama and people who think Wong Jing can't direct a decent film.

PS. As par for the course of most Mei Ah releases, the English Subtitles aren't all that great, but that shouldn't deter Western Fans, as Mei Ah have done a great job in restoring many of the scenes deleted from most other versions.

Great remastering! Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
"God of Gamblers" is a Chow Yun-Fat classic. It's an interesting mix of drama, action, and slapstick comedy, all coming together to make a highly enjoyable whole. Previously only available in full-screen, this remastered version is in proper widescreen format with removable subtitles. The picture is as clear as I have seen this film, the subtitles are now readable. The only downside is that the English subtitles are in the same broken English as the original version, but this is a minor inconvenience. There is an additional interview with Wong Jing and I was pleasantly surprised to see that this, too, has removable subtitles. Overall, this is highly recommended, the best version I've seen of this film on home video so far.

This is probably one of the best known film's by Chow Yun Fat as it combins style, comedy and action together to make this one of the best films from the 1980's.

Ok, mabey this isn't the best Chow Yun Fat movie there is, but I like it, and if you like his movies it is a must. The movie has an easy plot, and the humor with its dopey music seems more like it was made for anime. God of Gamblers is a good break from the more serious movies Chow Yun Fat movies, which only proves his credit as an actor. CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
