Professional Review of "Going To School With Dad On My Back (Taiwan Version)"

November 19, 2008

A Mainland Chinese film about family with a title this tantalizing pretty much guarantees that you’ll see the main character indeed going to school with the titular father on his back. And you do. For good measure they throw in a scene of the father going to school with the son on his back.

A father/son movie, Going To School With Father On My Back starts with son, Shiwa, getting chosen, by dumb luck, to go to school instead of his sister. They live in the dirt poor country with dad, Shida, who's a semi-lovable grump. But only semi. Shiwa goes to school, sister gets married off for money so he can stay in school, Shiwa wins the Chemistry Olympics and goes to University to become a teacher. That's the plot, so if you’re looking for complicated story-telling, look elsewhere.

It's the form, not the function, of this movie that's so interesting. It's a neat lesson in how to transform a TV "Movie of the Week" into grand drama. There are lots of "beauty of the Chinese countryside" shots, lots of well-chosen orchestral stirrings, plenty of shots of students working and, literally, burning the midnight oil. The movie is dedicated to valorizing a kid's first day in school, to turning into an epic the stuff of everyday life, and it succeeds. Viewers will either be fascinated or bored.

One of the most interesting aspects of this film is the seemingly shallow relationship between father and son. If you thought your parents were high maintenance wait until you see Shida. When he doesn't get his way he collapses to the ground, arms flailing, he tries to get on welfare and he pitches himself head-first into the family well. When Shiwa finally puts Dad on his back you can't tell if it's father-son bonding at its best, or co-dependency at its worst. It's this prickly edge, the pleasure/pain relationship of Shiwa and Shida, that keeps the movie from vanishing from memory soon after viewing.

A True Story and Deeply Moving Customer Review Rated Bad 10 - 10 out of 10
A truly wonderful movie about the spirit of
survival despite the odds. About a poverty stricken
and debilitatingly sick father's determination for
his son to continue his education. About the son
who refuses to ignore his father's health and finally
held his father on his back so he can do both of
going to the teaching college and to take care
of his father. Beautifully done and very well acted.
Being a true story adds much credibility. The young
man must be in his mid twenty's now. A big salute to
him. The movie also touched upon the unfair treatment
of daughters in general by their parents which is
also very real I am sure.
An excellent movie.

It was one of my greatest pleasure to write the English subtitles for this film. What an honor to have been a small part of this brilliant film. I hope my subtitles will allow this film to be seen by English-speaking audience from all over the world. It truly is one of the best movies I have ever seen in my life.
