She does it again!

Bird's first album without producer/DJ Shinichi Osawa (hope I spelled that right), and her sense of "hybrid" really shines. Without Osawa, she moves further away from the disco/dance sound which some people consider to have overwhelmed her voice, and it's such a fusion of musical elements that you can't quite pin down which is which. While the music might sound foreign, Bird's lyrics are very Japonesque, laden with kanji compared to the bulk of J-pop lyrics. That makes the album even more interesting, it is an extra fine, exquisite ("gokujou") hybrid. Bird is one of the few Japanese artists that have kept me interested over the past couple of years. This album might be less catchy than "Mindtravel", but better in giving you a view of who Bird is and perhaps her musical influences. |
