Japanese folk-rock duo Love Psychedelico have given their fans one more reason to fawn over both the band’s catchy sound and their stellar live show with Golden Grapefruit Box, a two-disc DVD set that captures their 2007 concert at Tokyo’s famed Budokan and a bevy of other extras. A sequel of sorts to 2005’s In Concert at Budokan, this DVD set aims to immerse viewers much deeper into the world of lead singer Kumi and guitarist Naoki Sato. The first disc is a 13-song, 90-minute set that predominately features songs from the band’s fourth studio album. The concert opens with “Everyone, Everyone,” an epic rocker that has a large backing choir singing the chorus while Kumi name-drops the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan. A driving guitar rhythm kicks off the song “Freedom” as fluorescent pillars surrounding the stage surge to life. Sato runs around the stage like a Japanese Keith Richards, pumping the crowd up all the while, as Kumi remains stationary and belts out the tune with her trademark Sheryl-Crow-by-way-of-Tokyo vocals. As cameras pan and cut to the musicians on the stage, the lights on the stage cast a white aura around each of them and give the whole thing an otherworldly feel, like the band is performing in someone’s dream. It bears mentioning that a good chunk of my enjoyment in watching the first disc comes from Sato’s larger-than-life presence on the stage. The guy exudes pure coolness and charisma on the level of any major modern rock star you’d care to name. When the concert wraps with an extended take on Golden Grapefruit closer “Sad Story,” you have the option of watching a five-minute “documentary” that shows Delico rehearsing and ends with a token shot of the stage being erected in fast-forward time-lapse – Why do all concert videos do that? – but I didn’t find it to be a particularly substantial part of the band’s live experience. The second disc starts with another live performance, this time a scaled-down, six-song set at Tokyo’s LIQUIDROOM venue. Elsewhere on the disc are seven music videos, including two recorded live and a brand new one for the song “7 Days.” The whole shebang comes packaged in a sturdy and thick case that will look glorious on your shelf. Golden Grapefruit Box is definitely a lasting testament to one of the most enduring Japanese pop bands of the last 20 years. |
